Gun Lake Casino announced its annual Toys for Tots collection, which will run from Dec. 1 through Dec. 15. On Sunday, Dec. 1, from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m., GLC kicks off the annual event by inviting the public to take photos with Santa, decorate cookies, enjoy a hot cocoa station, play holiday games for gifts, and much more. Stuff the Trailer for Wasauksing First Nation is an annual effort during November to collect donated items for a selected tribal nation. The collection effort runs until November 30. There will be two main collection sites, one at Gun Lake Casino and the other at the Gun Lake Tribe Administration Office. Gun Lake Casino team members, guests, Tribal Citizens and Gun Lake Tribe employees are all encouraged to donate. Free play vouchers up to $100 will be given to those who donate.

The Gun Lake Tribe’s Tribal Historic Preservation Office has been awarded a $41,384 Tribal Heritage Grant funded by the Historic Preservation Fund and administered by the National Park Service, Department of Interior. The funds awarded through this grant will allow the Tribal Historic Preservation Office to create a Tribal Register of Historic Places and implement forms, policies, and procedures. “This grant funding allows us to continue to build historic preservation programs for our Gun Lake Tribe Citizens and to build out our infrastructure to better serve them,” said Tribal Historic Preservation Officer Lakota Hobia, “We are also able to use this grant money to further focus on community outreach and educational programming.” See the story from Indian Gaming at this link: https://shorturl.at/o8Ju3

Council Member Ben Brenner spoke at the ribbon cutting for Wayland Union School's new soccer facility on Oct. 2. Local Revenue Sharing Board (LRSB) funds from Gun Lake Casino paid for the $425,000 turf field. For the 2023-24 school year, WUS received $1,975,871 from Gun Lake Tribe. This is only a part of the $2,246,765 the LRSB received this year, with the State of Michigan receiving $4,889,063. Since Gun Lake Casino opened in 2011, $207,705,665 in total payments have been distributed to the State, LRSB and GLIMI, a non-gaming economic development entity with both Tribal and State oversight.

Gun Lake Tribe awarded Museum and Library Grant Gun Lake Tribe was the recent recipient of a $134,594 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The mission of IMLS is to advance, support, and empower America’s museums, libraries, and related organizations through grantmaking, research, and policy development. Using these funds, the Education Department will develop the “Gékendamen Pane (Always We Are Learning)” project and hire a higher education specialist to support all Tribal citizens, especially Tribal youth seeking to access the Gun Lake Tribe’s higher education programming. Using this funding, the project team will: - Develop evaluative tools to measure qualitative and quantitative project data - Develop and implement continuing education courses - Identify and hire contractual teachers for the continuing education courses - Develop a communications schedule and advertise higher education programming to Tribal citizens - Leverage existing events and implement new events to educate Tribal citizens about special higher education topics - Support the coverage of expenses related to staff participation at professional conferences “This grant will help us in our mission to educate our Citizens,” said Gun Lake Tribe Librarian Karen Bos. “By helping more Tribal citizens pursue a higher education, the Tribe will increase the skills and knowledge of its potential workforce, giving Tribal citizens the capacity to fill job positions across all Tribal enterprises.”
