📈 Research from Urban Institute WorkRise shows that over the past 50 years, the composition of the low-wage workforce has changed: more than half of low-wage workers are now people of color, up from just 20 percent in 1971. That means that today, Black and Latino workers and women are more likely to be segregated into worse-quality and lower-paying jobs. Healthcare support and caregiving jobs are among the most occupationally segregated: ❗️Personal care and service occupations saw the largest jump, consisting of just 17 percent workers of color in 1971 and 59 percent workers of color today. ❗️Healthcare support occupations moved from 39 percent to 57 percent workers of color. Today recognizes #VeteransInApprenticeship, the capstone of a productive and energizing #NAW2024. Earlier this week, H-CAP proudly participated in this year's "Paid Apprenticeships for Veterans" event, hosted by the state of California's Employment Development Department (EDD). The successful webinar brought together veterans, employers, and partner organizations, with H-CAP Program Manager Maria Isabela Aldana sharing valuable resources to help veterans advance in healthcare careers and guiding organizations on expanding registered apprenticeship programs in this vital community. 🎖️ H-CAP is proud to support veterans! 👉 We're available to help organizations looking to broaden their initiatives to include registered apprenticeship programs for vets. Thank you, CA Employment Development Department, for sponsoring this important event!

🔎 New stats out on occupational segregation in the direct care sector: #ApprenticeshipExpansion is a critical tool for reducing occupational segregation in high-demand sectors like direct care, providing opportunities for quality jobs and career mobility to underserved populations of workers. From KFF: 💥 Of 3 million direct care workers (DCWs) in the U.S., 87% are women, 65% are paid low wages, and over one-quarter (28%) are Black. Over four in ten DCWs are 50+ years old (41%). 💥 Home health aides, personal care aides, nursing assistants and LPNs are more likely to be under 35, Black or Hispanic, low-paid workers, and uninsured/covered by Medicaid when compared with RNs. 💥 DCWs in home and community-based settings are more likely to be noncitizens and work part-time. Join us in tackling this crisis - explore opportunities with H-CAP to expand quality apprenticeship programs in the direct care sector. #NAW2024 https://lnkd.in/dKraTXvb
