About us
Habitat for Humanity of Kansas City is a 501(c)(3)organization working to strengthen families and communities by increasing the number of quality, affordable homes for single-family residents in the Greater Kansas City area. We endeavor to create opportunities for low-income families to develop equity and independence through homeownership. We believe in building strength, stability and self-reliance through affordable shelter. Since 1979 we have built, renovated, or repaired more than 700 homes in Wyandotte, Leavenworth and Johnson counties in Kansas, and Clay, Platte and Jackson counties in Missouri. In addition to providing affordable housing, Habitat KC also helps thousands of families through our financial literacy and HOPE programs.

🏠 Racial disparities in homeownership are real—and they’re personal. In Kansas City, Black homeownership rates are 30% lower than White homeownership rates, the result of decades of discriminatory housing policies. These aren’t just statistics—they represent families, futures, and opportunities that were denied. Yesterday, Habitat for Humanity of Kansas City hosted the Advancing Black Homeownership workshop, where we explored how both historical and modern housing practices have created these disparities. 📢 Bring this workshop to your team and be part of the movement to advance black homeownership. Akiyaa would love to chat if you are interested! She’s a fabulous facilitator.

Habitat for Humanity of Kansas City hosted a Race & Housing workshop yesterday at the office on Linwood to wrap up Black History Month. It was a great turnout for such a heavy topic. Did you know ... In Kansas City, the homeownership rate for Black residents is 30% lower than that of white residents, a disparity rooted in decades of discriminatory policies. These statistics represent real families and have lasting implications for futures and opportunities. TOGETHER, we CAN build a more equitable Kansas City. #GetInvolved #SomethingYouCanDo #BuildingEquity

Learning about the history of housing discrimination is just the first step. The real impact comes when we use that knowledge to break down barriers. Let’s turn awareness into action—bring this workshop to your team and be part of the change. Kudos Akiyaa! The Habitat for Humanity of Kansas City Race and Housing Workshop was incredibly informative and insightful! #advancingblackhomeownership

Nearly 60 years after Congress outlawed race-based discrimination, the Black and white homeownership gap remains at 30 percentage points. At Habitat KC, we know homeownership is key to establishing a new legacy and building generational wealth — yet systemic inequities persist. Everyone deserves a safe, stable place to live, but structures of intentional and systemic racial discrimination have created barriers to homeownership for many Black families. For example, Black Kansas Citians face a 20.69% mortgage loan denial rate — compared to 9.97% for White Kansas Citians. 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗞𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗮𝘀 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆.
