We build strength, stability, and independence through affordable homeownership.

About us

Habitat for Humanity Portland Region builds affordable and sustainable homes, and empowers people through successful homeownership. Founded in 1981, Habitat for Humanity Portland Region serves Multnomah, east Washington, and northern Clackamas counties. We believe that everyone deserves a decent, affordable place to call home – especially those historically left out of homeownership. We are the largest developer of affordable homes for sale in the Portland region, working with our community to build and repair more than 100 homes each year, from Gresham to Hillsboro. Sale prices are based on a lasting affordable model which ensures that the home is affordable not only to the first buyer but future generations as well. All who believe that everyone needs a decent, affordable place to live are welcome to help with the work, regardless of race, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, political views or any of the other distinctions that too often divide people. At Habitat for Humanity, our vision is a world where everyone — every person, every family, every child — has a decent and affordable place to call home.

  • We celebrated the life of President Jimmy Carter this weekend by gathering with supporters and staff at one of our build sites, donning his signature red handkerchief and connecting over coffee. Some shared stories of meeting the Carters: on a work project, a plane, at church, a book-signing. Others told how the Carters inspired through their example of service and compassion. Even from afar, their authenticity and strong work ethic struck a chord. “I think it’s pretty unusual for an ex-president that this many people have a personal connection or have met him,” observed Matina Kaufmann, VP of Homeownership and Neighborhood Programs. “I think that’s pretty unique and special.”

  • “You have to make do with the tools at your disposal and figure out how to do things outside the box to achieve your goal,” says Divaa-elon. She’s one of our current Habitat AmeriCorps members — combining her natural creativity and curiosity as Home Repair Crew Lead. Divaa-elon hopes to learn enough over the next year to be a jack-of-all-trades. Among other things, she’s earned her Forklift Certification and has helped a homeowner repair a huge hole in their ceiling caused by a leaky roof. Divaa-elon is also an aspiring animator and has brought her artistic talent to our Playhouse Experience. She helped with the trauma-informed design of the playhouse for Path Home, incorporating circular shapes to evoke a calming experience for the kids. Originally from Brooklyn, New York, Divaa-elon has spent much of her life in the Pacific Northwest. But she’s new to Portland and loves exploring the city’s unique character and things that #keepportlandweird

  • On this National Day of Mourning for President Jimmy Carter, we celebrate his life and honor his legacy. Several Habitat Portland Region staff have shared memories of meeting him and being inspired by his example. Erika Kennel, VP of Resource Development, took this photo of President and Mrs. Carter in 2009. “Their warmth and curiosity weren’t just small talk; they embodied the spirit of Habitat for Humanity — humility, connection, and shared purpose,” Kennel recalled. After overcoming unimaginable challenges, Heather has created a safe, stable space where her family can thrive ❤️ “It was important for me to be able to own my own place and have a home for my children.
