Are you struggling getting your child to act how you would like them to? Whether you are raising a younger child or you are in the middle of the teenage years the answer is the same. Start with connection. Because when your child feels connected to you they will trust you and will take into account your perspective more. And that trust is what leads to influence over behavior. Especially teen behavior. —---------- I'm Jen and I post about all things #parenting and how to help strengthen your relationship with your child while minimizing challenging behaviors. 🔔 Follow me for more content like this: Happy Parenting and Families 🔁 Repost for other parents so they don’t feel alone in their struggles. As a parent coach, I usually work with parents and educators and when I provide speaking services. But did you know I also help assist in trainings for police departments from time to time? Because I specialize in trauma and neurodivergent brains I collaborate on trainings that help promote community policing efforts, better police understanding of communities that are more likely to interact with police, and non-violent deescalation techniques. If you want to learn more about the various ways I provide speaking events, check out my speaking page: https://lnkd.in/gkzbGwJi —---------- I'm Jen and I post about all things #parenting and how to help strengthen your relationship with your child while minimizing challenging behaviors. 🔔 Follow me for more content like this: Happy Parenting and Families 🔁 Repost for other parents so they don’t feel alone in their struggles. Parenting guilt can add to feelings of overwhelm. Self-compassion can help you let go of the guilt and negative feelings. Maybe you yelled more than you wanted to. Maybe you shamed your child. Or maybe you fell into old habits and patterns. It can feel like a double punch because not only did you disappoint yourself with how you acted, but you feel the guilt of how your child experienced the interaction. Like everyone, there will be times when you regret how you handled something. But shifting your thoughts from how you handled it poorly to ‘I did the best I could at the time’ can help you shift away from guilt and into a position where you can view something more objectively. And that helps you make changes for the future. Maybe you were tired, stressed, dysregulated, etc. Recognize your part, forgive yourself, make repairs with your child, and grant yourself compassion for being human and making a mistake. Then think about how you can do things differently next time. Even kids get burnt out and feel overwhelmed from time to time. But a lot of the time they will not ask for help. Instead it comes out in attitude or challenging behaviors. Which is why sharing this affirmation with your child or teen can be helpful: You can be powerful and ask for help at the same time Teaching your child when to ask for help and lean into support can be a great step to not only easing their load, but teaching them the foundations for good self-care habits. —---------------------------- I'm Jen and I post about #parenting and how to help strengthen your relationship with your child while minimizing challenging behaviors. 🔔 Follow me for more content like this: Happy Parenting and Families 🔁 Repost for other parents so they don’t feel alone in their struggles. I’ve been coming across a theme in my newer clients. They are giving from an empty well and it has created feelings of frustration and anger towards their children. So I’ve started to focus a lot on self-care. Because the hard truth is: Neglecting yourself, or feeling like you always have to sacrifice your wants and needs, to take care of somebody else may seem like an act of love, but giving from a place of emptiness only leads to resentment. And that resentment can grow into divide, anger and frustration. And soon no one in the house is getting what they need. So think about how you can practice a little self-care over the next couple of days. Is it letting go of something on your to do list? Is it treating yourself to a warm beverage that you enjoy in silence? Whatever it is, find something that can help to refill your well. Helping kids to process their feelings instead of ignoring them is one of the most effective ways to help them to move past something difficult. Like so much of life, parenting is rarely linear. Your child may not be developing at the same rate as their peers and you may fear that they will never catch up and learn to make good choices. Or you may think you made it past the really bad times only to get blind sided by another rough patch. Or you might be constantly plagued by the thought "shouldn't you know this by now!?!" But because childhood is all about learning, parenting is hard. And learning doesn't stop at the magical age of 18. Shifting your expectations to know that there will be many ups and downs can help take away the pressure to be always hitting the mark. When your child struggles it means they have more learning to do. Be supportive and don't be afraid to shift your parenting to put in more structure and supports to help your child learn until they can gain forward momentum once more. We all need connection, but children aren't usually going to tell you flat out that they need connection or why they are looking for connection. But when you take the time to connect completely (body facing towards them, facial expression open/calm and phone down) , even if it is just for a few minutes, you are opening up the chance to turn your child's day around. —-------- I'm Jen and I post about all things #parenting. 🔔 Follow me for more content like this: Happy Parenting and Families 🔁 Repost for other parents so they don’t feel alone in their struggles.
