  • Maryland Gov. Wes Moore announced the inaugural grantees of the ENOUGH Grant Program, a first-in-the-nation, state-wide, place-based initiative to end concentrated child poverty. The 27 grantee organizations, representing Maryland’s urban, rural, and suburban communities, will receive funding and technical assistance from the state to combat child poverty at the neighborhood level through cross-sector partnerships. Our William Julius Wilson Institute team, which played an instrumental role in the passage and implementation of the ENOUGH Act, spoke with Governor Moore and three of the grantees, Elev8 Baltimore, Latin American Youth Center, and San Mar Family and Community Services about the transformative impact the ENOUGH Grant Program will have on children and families, and its potential to serve as a national model. #PowerofPlace

  • Our Practitioners Institute and William Julius Wilson Institute teams welcomed Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin and place-based leaders from Alabama to the Zone to discuss how the city can deliver place-based cradle-to-career services to students and their families to close opportunity gaps and combat poverty. After driving revitalization in its Woodlawn and Smithfield neighborhoods, Birmingham is now exploring cross-sector strategies to deepen investments in early childhood and K–12 education throughout the city. By working together across education, housing, and economic development, cities like Birmingham are building pathways to opportunity for all. Thanks to Birmingham City Schools, Woodlawn United, Breakthrough Birmingham, EmpowerED Birmingham, Prosper Birmingham, The Birmingham Promise, Alabama Families For Great Schools, and ¡HICA! Hispanic and Immigrant Center of Alabama for joining us! #PowerOfPlace

  • Our high school scholars from across the Zone explored what it could be like to be future doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs, and more at our annual High School Career Fair hosted by HCZ Wealth Builds! Held at the HCZ Armory, scholars explored diverse career paths — connecting with professionals in fields like education, healthcare, law, public safety, and business. Gaining real-world advice and critical insights, our scholars left empowered to unlock their potential and build successful futures.

  • “We are the village. The village is built on joy, laughter, and excellence.” Our theme for this year's Power of Place was “It Takes a Village” — a testament to the collaborative, cross-sector, and community-based nature of our movement. Bringing together hundreds of national leaders, practitioners, and policymakers in Miami Beach, Power of Place catalyzed the field of place-based cradle-to-career with inspiring speeches and community building. We shared resources, honed our expertise, and renewed our commitment to impact the lives of millions of children and families and put them on the pathway to social and economic mobility. Check out highlights from our third annual convening!

  • Our Practitioners Institute and William Julius Wilson Institute teams welcomed leaders from the Baltimore Orioles and Baltimore City Public Schools to the Zone! During their visit, the teams gained insights into HCZ’s cradle-to-career model and how they can strengthen their support for Harlem Park Elementary Middle School students in West Baltimore as part of their Adopt a School campaign. We’re excited about the Orioles’ commitment to impacting their community through education, family support, and food security. #PowerofPlace
