Harpe Bio is developing a portfolio of natural-based herbicides. Director & COO Dan Pepitone sat down with Mike Adams to talk about Harpe Bioherbicides. Harpe is using plant extracts, and one of the main sources of our ingredients is the mint plant. Within the mint plant, a series of molecules that when formulated become new modes of action herbicides. We're really offering formulations that can be used in organic settings, and expand agriculture that way, or in combination with existing synthetic chemistries, really allowing those combinations to reduce the amount of synthetic chemistry you need and overcome weed resistance. Farmers have reported yield losses from uncontrolled Palmer amaranth of up to 91% in corn and 79% in soybeans, according to USDA. Palmer Amaranth and Waterhemp, both pigweed species, are often cited as driver weeds in the U.S. because of their prolific seed production, competitiveness with crops, genetic diversity, and ability to germinate throughout the growing season. And in a recent AgWeb poll asking more than 400 farmers -- What Is Your Top Weed Nemesis on Your Farm? It’s no surprise that Waterhemp took the top spot, earning 35% of the votes. The second was Palmer amaranth, with 15% of the votes. In this video, the all-natural formulation of Harpe Bioherbicide can be seen controlling Waterhemp (left) and Palmer amaranth (right) which are resistant to multiple synthetic herbicides including glyphosate. Harpe Bioherbicide formulations feature a series of naturally occurring active ingredient molecules found in plant extracts that can effectively eliminate resistant and tough-to-control weeds.
