In the Havas Health Network sponsored issue of Rare Revolution Magazine this month, Havas Life London Group Creative Director Dick Dunford discusses the importance of creativity in communications, and our approach to reaching communities and healthcare professionals affected by rare diseases #RareDiseaseDay
In the world of rare diseases, communication plays a pivotal role. This is #RareNext - examining the gaps in #RareDisease and solutions to close them. In our second spotlight, we examine the disconnect between types of data: findings generated by clinical trials with small populations, versus the reported - and often nuanced - real life experience of patients themselves. As the rare landscape evolves, there is an increasing recognition of the value of patient-reported outcomes and real-world evidence. But how can we harness this data at the right time and in the right way to achieve a common understanding of what is a meaningful outcome? We are committed to championing meaningful data that demonstrates value - find out how in the Havas Futures Report on Rare. I'm not usually one to get personal on LinkedIn, but here we are. Living with Ankylosing Spondylitis (#AS) has been a challenging journey—one I didn’t even realize I was on for a decade. AS affects 0.1–1% of the global population, yet it often goes undiagnosed for far too long. Throughout my teens and early 20s, I dealt with persistent, unexplained pain in my hips, assuming it was just growing pains—something I had to push through. Being diagnosed at 23 was both a relief and an adjustment, especially after learning that AS is more commonly seen in men, making my path to diagnosis even more complicated. It’s still surreal to rely on medication every day just to do something as simple as walking without pain. Managing AS is a constant balance of movement, rest, and listening to what my body needs. While it’s not easy, it has taught me resilience, self-advocacy, and how to live with something most people can’t see but I feel every day. So why am I sharing this? Because sharing our stories is one of the most powerful ways we can raise awareness and help others feel less alone in their rare disease journey. I’m grateful to be supporting the future of where rare goes next and making a meaningful difference for Rare Disease Day 2025 with Havas Health Network. #RareNext #RareDiseaseDay #RDD #AnkylosingSpondylitis #OneHavas #HavasHealth #HavasLife #MeaningfulDifference Havas Life London Havas Life Rare

This is #RareNext - creating meaningful connections in #RareDisease. The practical difficulties experienced during people’s “diagnostic odyssey” are understood throughout the rare community. But the emotional burden is less widely acknowledged, is just as damaging, and can persist long after diagnosis. At Havas Health Network, we believe that by creating meaningful connections with all stakeholders in the rare community we can help build a culture of transparency, manage expectations and support patients and their loved ones on every step of their journey.
