Each year, 145 billion meals’ worth of food goes to waste in the U.S., and we can all make small changes to help minimize the amount of food going into landfills this holiday season. Some of these tips include swapping out some “traditional” holiday food items if they’re less popular with your ‘ohana and donating unused shelf-stable ingredients. April Hail, a Hawai‘i mom and former high school teacher, founded Keiki Kaukau in 2019. In 29% of households with children in Hawai‘i, one or more children face food insecurity. On this #WorldChildrensDay, we recognize how important it is for our keiki to be well-nourished to safeguard their healthy development. Hawai‘i Foodbank and our network of agency partners are working to provide for programs like the Food 4 Keiki School Pantry and Kaukau 4 Keiki summer meals program to ensure our keiki have enough nutritious food.
