📢 Save the silvery minnow!! 🐟 Did you know that the Rio Grande silvery minnow is one of the most endangered fish in North America? These shimmery swimmers have lost 95% of their habitat range in the Middle Rio Grande corridor. Fortunately, the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority is restoring the area using nature-based solutions. The new terraced design of its outfall site allows floodwaters to access the floodplain and nourish native species—creating the ideal environment for the silvery minnow to spawn. Learn more about how this project is building a bright future for the Middle Rio Grande and all its inhabitants. Learn more 👉 https://lnkd.in/gxEemgYF

🚰🔬💡🌵 Desalination, destruction, and discovery in the desert—this is the story of Hazen and Aclarity’s PFAS pilot study in Alamogordo, New Mexico. Pushing the boundaries of what is possible when it comes to destroying PFAS in drinking water waste residuals, our team of researchers at the Bureau of Reclamation’s Brackish Groundwater National Desalination Research Facility tested the durability and efficacy of electrochemical oxidation (EO) technology. Learn more about how piloting new technology helps Hazen and its clients stay on the cutting-edge of solutions for safeguarding our water systems, and how EO could help tackle the persistent problem of PFAS: https://lnkd.in/gbMYEM-Z

Water utilities are facing an increasingly urgent question: “How much is PFAS treatment going to cost my customers?” Using machine learning and deep experience dealing with emerging contaminants, Hazen is helping utilities find the answer. PFAS are ubiquitous chemicals in commercial manufacturing. Their uses in the creation of a huge variety of products continue to grow, and they can be found pretty much anywhere scientists look, from human blood to Arctic sea ice. In the meantime, the prevalence of PFAS has left drinking water utilities to figure out how to meet stringent—and costly—PFAS regulations. Hazen has helped utilities big and small figure out exactly how much money they’re going to need to meet these requirements, then helped them determine the best, most cost-effective solutions. Read more here about how utilities can take some of the guesswork out of their PFAS future. https://lnkd.in/gZWHdG3v #AllThingsWater #PFAS

For regions already grappling with the consequences of a changing climate, collaboration among diverse sets of stakeholders is key to charting a resilient water future. A prime example of this cooperation in practice? Canada’s Alberta province, which announced a historic water-sharing agreement in Spring 2024 in which major industrial users, irrigation districts, and multiple municipalities voluntarily agreed to cut back their water use. Hazen and WaterSMART Solutions Ltd. teamed up to help foster this landmark agreement, providing expert facilitation and operational modeling of the region’s river basins to drive productive conversations and data-driven decision-making. The project is just one example of what will be countless collaborative successes, as Hazen acquired WaterSMART on November 1, 2024, making it even easier to provide this kind of comprehensive water resources planning support. November 15 marks another huge LCRR milestone, with utilities across the country working hard to ensure the annual material notifications to their customers are postmarked by today. It's a great time to reflect on the water industry's massive undertaking to notify customers about known and suspected lead service lines. Water suppliers coast to coast have developed programs that not only meet the EPA's new compliance standards but have also created opportunities to connect with customers and build trust. Here’s what some of them had to say: 📬 “We are building touch points with customers we didn't have before. We’re more than a bill now.” 💡 “We made changes to better fit the community. We made it less alarming, but still factual.” 🚰 “Success is not just meeting regulatory compliance, but creating a program that gains public trust, removes a dangerous material from drinking water systems, and protects public health.” Dig into the full story of how utilities unearthed hidden opportunities in Lead and Copper Rule communications: https://lnkd.in/dFqd_fUi Photo credit: Denver Water #AllThingsWater

A new facility in Maryland is turning sewage sludge into ⚡ renewable energy and 🌱 high-quality fertilizer! WSSC Water's Piscataway Bioenergy Facility is: 🦅 Just across the Potomac River (but generally out of sight) from Mount Vernon, George Washington's famous home 🤓 The seventh facility in the U.S. to treat biosolids using thermal hydrolysis process, or THP, followed by anaerobic digestion 📈 Capable of generating renewable natural gas and Class A biosolids, which can be used on crops Hazen helped design the Bioenergy Facility as a more sustainable way to manage WSSC's biosolids. 📰 On October 29, 2012, Hurricane Sandy devastated coastal communities across New Jersey and New York. Unfortunately, storms of this magnitude that bring this level of devastation are becoming more frequent and affecting more communities. After Sandy, Hazen was honored to help restore the Bay Park facility in Nassau County to operation quickly, helping to sustain both the many communities that rely on it and the surrounding marshland ecosystem. To mark the anniversary, we would like to commend all those working to restore the communities most recently devastated by severe storms and also all the utilities working to make their facilities resilient to such storms. We must come together to recover and adapt to our changing climate. Together, we can. Learn more about Bay Park's recovery from Hurricane Sandy: https://lnkd.in/e6r_7CTk
