Hungarian hub against disinformation

About us

The fight against disinformation campaigns in Hungary has entered into a new phase in January 2023 with the launch of an expanded version of the Hungarian Digital Media Observatory (HDMO). Since its launch in 2021, the fact-checking portal lakmusz.hu (Lakmusz is Hungarian for Litmus-test) reached over 1.5 million readers, and this work will be expanded by the six autonomous organizations working in the Hungarian Digital Media Observatory. Researchers from Political Capital (HU) and the Mérték Médiaelemző Műhely (Mertek Media Monitor) will study the spread of disinformation and the effectiveness of measures taken to combat it, journalists from the French news agency AFP News Agency and Lakmusz will continue their fact-checking work, the Idea Alapítvány (Idea Foundation) will provide media literacy courses, and the digital infrastructure of HDMO will be provided by the French epresspack. The 30-month project is co-financed by the European Commission as part of the Digital Europe Programme. The HDMO consortium was selected by the European Commission through an open call and is fully independent.

The EFCSN is alarmed by some platforms’ retraction from the same commitments they took just two years ago under the Code of Practice on Disinformation and is concerned about their overall commitment to the welfare of millions the Europeans who use their services every day. As the Code evolves from a voluntary set of principles to an official co-regulatory instrument of the Digital Services Act, Google, YouTube and LinkedIn’s complete withdrawal from the fact-checking chapter is extremely concerning. Research shows fact-checking and fact-checking labels work, and Community Notes are not an effective alternative. Read the full statement: https://lnkd.in/dED7AqKH

🤔 What are the differences between the conspiracy and disinformation beliefs in Czechia 🇨🇿, Slovakia 🇸🇰, Hungary 🇭🇺 and Bulgaria 🇧🇬? #CEDMO, HDMO and BRODhub, regional hubs of European Digital Media Observatory, cooperated on joint research encompassing four countries across Europe. CEDMO was represented in the survey by our researcher Michal Šenk. The research focused on the conspiracy mentality and disinformation beliefs of the societies, as well as election interference, political polarization, challenges for the #EU and many more. Here are some of the valuable insights: 📌 Czechs and Slovaks demonstrated higher resilience towards disinformation, while Hungarian society exhibited a chronic susceptibility to disinformation and conspiracy narratives. Bulgaria occupies a middle ground. 📌 False beliefs frequently intersect: embracing one conspiracy theory or disinformation narrative is often associated with accepting others. 📌 Distrust of facts and objective reality has escalated to concerning levels across all four countries. 📌 Concerns about election interference were widespread, with perceptions differing significantly across the region. 📌 The region exhibits clear signs of "Ukraine fatigue," with limited support for military aid to Ukraine. Hungarians show the lowest support at 10%, while Czechs are the most supportive at 25%. 👉 Find out more interesting revelations, including detailed data comparison across the four countries, at: https://lnkd.in/ghjbEsmH Peter Kreko PhD. 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: 𝐄𝐃𝐌𝐎 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭-𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐌𝐞𝐭𝐚’𝐬 𝐔-𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧 𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced this week that, starting in the US, the company will “get rid of fact-checkers” by progressively phasing out its third-party fact-checking programme, and instead following the much-criticized “community notes” approach introduced by Elon Musk on X. This move is in stark contrast with Mr. Zuckerberg’s previous commitment to make his services a safer place for all users. His stated aim to “prioritise free speech” is politically motivated and an alibi to divert public attention away from the many instances of information manipulation and foreign interference that for years have wreaked havoc on the services of his company. By misrepresenting independent and professional fact-checking organisations as biased censors, he seeks to justify a decision that will deprive users of one important tool for them to critically assess the information they receive through Meta’s services, while being aware of narratives deliberately aimed at sapping civic discourse and democratic processes. He also undermines Meta’s past efforts to cope with a variety of service infrastructure manipulations and inauthentic behaviour that are exploited by disinformation agents to mislead users and silence legitimate voices. At a deeper level, Mr. Zuckerberg’s statement is an attack on the whole policy framework that the EU has established to promote an enabling environment for freedom of expression in the digital sphere: an environment where citizens can not only impart, but also freely seek and receive information upon which they can rely and freely form their own opinions. Moreover, Mr. Zuckerberg’s intervention is likely to worsen the climate of hostility and heighten the risks of abuse that independent journalists and fact-checking professionals already face. At the European Digital Media Observatory, we take this daunting start of 2025 as an opportunity to double down on our efforts to explain and promote the evidence-based EU approach to countering disinformation and engage with all relevant parties, including Meta, to ensure that wrongly motivated setbacks will not undermine society-wide efforts to protect the integrity of our digital communication environment. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eeRqg9RB

The EFCSN is disappointed by Meta’s decision to end its Third Party Fact-Checking Program and condemns its CEO’s statements linking fact-checking with censorship. Fact-checking is not censorship, but rather fact-checking adds to public debates and provides context for citizens to make up their own minds. The EFCSN encourages the European Union to stand strong in the face of such political pressure and not be deterred in its efforts to stop the spread of mis- and disinformation.
