For your disability inclusion and accessibility objectives | Making the invisible, visible
About us
When you need additional support or a little more time Not all disabilities are visible – some are not immediately obvious, such as autism, dementia, anxiety, visual or hearing impairment. People with visual or hearing disabilities do not always wear glasses or hearing aids. Those with joint problems or chronic pain may not always use mobility aids. Although the hidden disability can make daily living more challenging for many people, it can be difficult for others to recognise or acknowledge. Others may not understand the cause of the problem, if they cannot see evidence of it in a visible way. The Sunflower Lanyard makes you visible If you have hidden disabilities and require assistance, wearing the green Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Lanyard indicates that you need additional support or just a little more time. Our Sunflower Lanyard has been purposefully designed to acts as a discreet sign to staff and work colleagues that the wearer has a hidden disability and requires additional assistance.

We are thrilled to announce the U.S. Department of State is the first Federal Agency Headquarters to launch the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program. It was brought to the Department by Alex Barrasso, Chair of Department’s Disability Action Group (DAG), an employee organization that works toward inclusion of individuals with disabilities at the Department. We hope that many more federal agencies will join this effort to identify and remove barriers and better support employees and the public at large with chronic medical conditions and disabilities that are not apparent. https://lnkd.in/gSbyDwBZ

have you ever wished that those around you knew you needed some assistance? life with a hidden disability can feel awkward at times. i remember when i was pregnant, in my third trimester in the winter in Montreal. under my big winter coat, you couldn’t tell. i was tired and with my centre of gravity off, i felt a little wobbly on the metro (subway). i wished there would have been a way for someone to realize that i might need to sit down. since 2015, there has been a subtle way to show that one might need some assistance, patience, kindness, or a seat on the subway with the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program. 🟢🌻those with hidden challenges can choose to wear Sunflower lanyards, pins, or bracelets with a GREEN background to indicate that they have a challenge that might require some support. ⚪🌻Supporters and allies of Sunflower Member organizations can wear Sunflower lanyards, pins and bracelets with a WHITE background – making assistance easy to spot. organizations are looking for ways to become more inclusive and accessible and this is an easy way to do so for the community with non-visible challenges. i’ve recently joined the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower 🌻🇺🇸🇨🇦 - North America program as the Regional Director in 🍁Canada and am thrilled to invite anyone interested in becoming a Member organization to join us in conversation in the inaugural Canadian Corporate Member Community Webinar: Tuesday, July 23rd, 2024 at 11 am EDT (8 Pacific, 9 Mountain, 10 Central, 11 Eastern, 12 Atlantic, 12:30 Newfoundland & Labrador, 16 British) joining me will be our CEO Paul White, Director of Business Development – Ruth Babet, and valued members Greater Toronto Airports Authority, Metrolinx, and Vancouver International Airport. we'll hear about the latest Sunflower news, Member impact and implementation stories, and end with Q&A. if you’re interested in building a more accessible organization for your customers and for your employees, please feel free to sign up. A replay will be made available to those who register. Sign up here: https://cutt.ly/GejnMZQb #hiddendisability #inclusivity #accessibility

On March 13th, Sunflower Friend and #MissBlackhawkValleysTeen2024, Megan Bowlyou, presented HD Sunflower at the Illinois State Capitol in Springfield, IL. Resolution SR0796 was presented on the Senate floor and Megan met with the Lt. Governor, the Secretary of State’s team and the Treasurer’s Office. Megan reports there was so much interest in the Sunflower program! Working together with Senator Mike Halpin (SR0796 sponsor), Senator Adriane Johnson and Senator Mary Edly-Allen (SR0796 co-sponsors), they are looking at bringing the Sunflower into libraries throughout the state of Illinois and also drivers facilities and state buildings. But Megan is not stopping there! She is now working with a State Representative who would like to do a Resolution in the Illinois State House. All these important steps at the local and state level help create momentum to get the Sunflower nationally recognized at the Federal level. We know it can happen!… Last July, the Brazilian parliament approved a bill to recognize the Sunflower as the official national symbol for people with non-visible disabilities after it was first recognized at the local and state level.🌻🇧🇷🎊 #HDSunflower #BeSeenWithSunflower #SunflowerLanyard #Illinois #IllinoisStateSenate #IllinoisStateCapitol #Resolution
