In the last century, we’ve seen a dramatic shift in what threatens our health. A hundred years ago, infectious diseases were the leading cause of death. Today, it’s chronic conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer—diseases that are, in many cases, preventable and manageable through good diet, exercise, and lifestyle choices. However, the way we teach and practice medicine hasn’t fully caught up with this reality. We continue to focus heavily on treating diseases after they occur rather than emphasizing prevention and holistic care. Many of today’s chronic diseases can be prevented or better managed if we place more emphasis on lifestyle medicine, nutrition, and long-term health habits in both medical education and practice. We need to: • 🧑⚕️ Educate future healthcare professionals on the critical role of diet, exercise, and mental health in preventing and managing chronic diseases. • 🌱 Incorporate holistic and preventative approaches into everyday medical practice, focusing not just on treating symptoms but on helping patients lead healthier lives overall. • 💪 Empower patients with the knowledge and tools they need to take control of their health outside the doctor’s office. In this week’s edition of the Health Hous newsletter, we talked with Akash Goel about his experiences navigating this evolving medical landscape. Dr. Goel shared his thoughts on how we must adapt our approach to medicine to better align with the needs of today’s population, emphasizing the importance of a preventative and holistic approach to healthcare. 📬 To read the full interview and get Your Weekly Dose of health and wellness in your inbox every Wednesday, sign up for our newsletter in the comments!
