Back in 2013, I attended a health literacy conference hosted by the Institute for Healthcare Advancement . It's an invaluable event I'd recommend for anyone interested in health literacy. That year, Richard Carmona the 17th United States Surgeon General, shared a powerful story during his keynote about the most important lesson he learned about health literacy and cultural competency. You can hear him tell the story in his own words here: https://lnkd.in/e8xTcgPW (Note: same story, different conference) For those of you who don't have 4 minutes and 40 seconds to spare, here's what happened: As a young military medic in Vietnam, Dr. Carmona visited a mountain village to provide medical care. Eager to treat patients, he was initially frustrated when the village chief insisted on spending hours getting to know him first. When he finally began seeing patients, his first case was a young girl with impetigo (a skin infection). He gave her soap for washing and antibiotics to take four times daily. When he returned weeks later, he found the girl had recovered—but not how he expected. The village had turned the antibiotics into a ceremonial necklace, believing the act of placing four pills daily on a string had created healing medicine. The lesson Dr. Carmona learned was profound: never assume patients understand your instructions or share your medical perspective. His story underscores the fact that effective healthcare requires more than just giving instructions—it demands clear communication that bridges cultural gaps and ensures genuine understanding. This is why well-designed patient education materials are so crucial: they help translate complex medical information into clear, culturally appropriate guidance that patients can truly understand and follow. Health literacy matters, and the right educational tools can help patients avoid getting lost in translation. #HealthLiteracy

Sometimes being sick feels overwhelming. You just want a hand to hold, a shoulder to cry on, or someone to listen. But remember: you are not alone. Your doctors and nurses are there to help guide you every step of the way. Patient education should do more than just deliver the facts, it should make sure no one feels left behind in their health journey. #HealthLiteracy #PatientExperience #YouAreNotAlone

3 out of 4 kids undergoing surgery experience significant anxiety and fear. (Getahun et al., 2020; Liang et al., 2021) . Nurses and child life specialists help prepare children for their experiences using a variety of techniques, including age-appropriate patient education. At Health Nuts Media, we’re passionate about making medical journeys less intimidating for kids through engaging, animated content. By explaining things in child-friendly ways, we help create a more positive experience for children and their families. #Pediatrics #PatientExperience #HealthEducation #KidsInHospitals #HealthLiteracy

When UC Health West Chester Hospital decided to implement The No Pass Zone, they knew that effective training materials were essential to their strategy. With over 1,000 call light notifications every day, West Chester Hospital understood how important The No Pass Zone could be to patient safety and experience. Staff members were scheduled to attend 1-hour training sessions to learn about The No Pass Zone and participate in group discussions and workgroups. Health Nuts Media developed a series of animated videos designed to support these training goals. https://lnkd.in/enEN8wvY #PatientSafety

Kid's are always asking, "What's that mean?" With nurses and child life professionals stretched so thin, a video dictionary that answers frequently-asked questions in an easy-to-understand format empowers kids, reduces burden on staff, and improves experience. #patienteducation #patientexperience #healthliteracy

When we first started Health Nuts Media I met a pediatric surgeon who said, "Do you know what you do?" What? "You lift the bed skirts up and show kids there really is no monster under there." He was right. Fear of the unknown can be overwhelming. Patient education can be more than facts. It can help put minds at ease. #patienteducation #patientexperience #healthliteracy

✨ "Every time we see a patient, we see a superhero." When creating animated patient education videos for Albany Medical Center's pediatric unit, we discovered something powerful: the superhero theme wasn't just a creative choice—it was already part of their culture. Behind the scenes insights from our collaboration: - Attention to detail matters: Even a single facial expression or the size of an animated needle could impact a child's comfort level - Less is more: Simplicity is key to making complex medical information accessible - Everything is intentional: From voice casting to character design, each element is carefully crafted - Cultural resonance: The superhero theme connects naturally with both healthcare providers and young patients As Jeanine from Albany Medical Center notes: "Kids are our superheroes... and they see us as superheroes too." In pediatric care, this mutual admiration creates a powerful foundation for healing. That's why we believe great patient education isn't just about information—it's about creating connections that inspire confidence and courage. #HealthcareHeroes #PediatricCare #PatientEducation #MedicalAnimation #HealthcareInnovation #KidsHealth #HealthLiteracy

🏥 When Albany Medical Center needed to make medical procedures less scary for young patients, they faced a crucial decision: create in-house educational content or partner with animation experts? "Leave it to the experts," says Jeanine, a nurse at Albany Medical. "We stick to medicine, they stick to animation – that's what makes the partnership powerful." Here's why professional healthcare animation makes a difference: - Brings complex medical procedures down to a child's level of understanding - Creates cultural representation that helps diverse patient populations feel seen - Customizes environments to match specific hospital settings, making content more relatable - Empowers parents to make truly informed decisions about their children's care As Jeanine puts it: "We made it look like our hospital... To them, it looks like we just took our hospital room and made it a cartoon." That's the magic of specialized healthcare animation – making the unfamiliar feel familiar, and the scary feel manageable. #HealthcareInnovation #PatientEducation #MedicalAnimation #HealthcareTechnology #PatientExperience #PediatricCare #healthliteracy
