Innovation in action! The Chainsaw Buyback program swaps startup capital for chainsaws used in logging. Now, with support from Health In Harmony’s Indonesian partner ASRI, community members in Sudakana, Indonesia are turning their disused chainsaw engines, guide bars and chains into tools for organic farming. In these photos, chainsaw parts are upcycled into machetes and other harvesting equipment – proving that with the right mindset, even the most unexpected materials can support positive impact for the planet. #SustainableFarming #InnovationForGood #CircularEconomy #ASRI #HealthInHarmony #ChainsawBuyback

Meet Junaidi, a member of the Chainsaw Buyback program In Indonesia, which facilitates former loggers selling their chainsaws in exchange for the startup costs of a new sustainable business. Junaidi recently took out his second loan to buy new equipment and supplies for his agricultural machinery workshop. Follow along this week to learn more about how programs like Chainsaw Buyback can prevent the loss of thousands of trees per chainsaw, adding up to hectares of protected forest at scale, and setting a blueprint for how community-designed livelihood solutions = improved planetary health. #SustainableFutures #ChainsawBuyback #CommunityLedSolutions #ClimateAction #PlanetaryHealth #SustainableLivelihoods

60 new rainwater harvesting systems completed in Manombo Commune! In summer 2023, Duke University Nicholas School of the Environment’s PlanetLab, led by Brian G. McAdoo, uncovered high levels of bacterial contamination in village drinking water in South Eastern Madagascar. Radical listening was carried out with the communities, and now 60 household rainwater catchment tanks have been built across 3 villages —bringing clean, safe drinking water to communities! This project was a collaboration between improper, Tatirano Social Enterprise, ZARASOA Madagascar & Duke University’s PlanetLab. We can’t wait to monitor how these systems are used & track their impact. #CleanWaterForAll #RainwaterHarvesting #CommunityLedSolutions

Health In Harmony partners Alam Sehat Lestari (ASRI) hosted a field trip to the Sukadana mangrove area in North Kayong, where the children learned about plants, animals, and enjoyed the magic of the mangroves! 🌿✨ Did you know? Mangroves are climate superheroes… They store up to 10 times more carbon than tropical rainforests, protect coastal communities from erosion, and support incredible biodiversity. Join us in protecting these vital ecosystems for a healthier, safer future for all! #MangroveMagic #PlanetaryHealth #ClimateAction #Mangroves #IndonesianMangroves

Anaphylaxis following a slow loris bite is one of myriad health problems related to the global health threats of forest fragmentation, biodiversity loss and wildlife trade. A new report in the BMJ highlights how a Planetary Health approach that promotes the health of humans, animals, and ecosystems alike can reduce these risks. At Health In Harmony, we embrace this planetary health framework, recognizing that the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, is essential for sustainable well-being. As the report concludes, discounted healthcare and alternative livelihood training for members of communities who stop illegal logging are key steps towards a healthier future for people and the planet. In Madagascar, Eco-polybags are being used in reforestation efforts by serving as nursery pots that help grow seedlings! Eco-polybags simplify the planting of seedlings, help the seedlings retain water, and serve as a fertilizer for the seedlings as they grow. In the district of Ikongo, individuals from a nearby women’s association masterfully craft these bags from banana stem fibers and the seedlings in the surrounding nurseries are thriving, all the while reducing plastic waste. #Reforestation #ClimateAction #CommunityDriven #SustainableFutures #Ikongo
