🌲 The war places enormous pressure on all of Ukraine’s natural resources, including forests — which only take up 15.9% of the land mass, but play a vital economic, environmental and social role.   A new blog by Lesya Loyko and Nataliya Voloshyna shares how the NGO FORZA, which was launched 15 years ago from a Helvetas-implemented project, is still driving the country’s forestry policies and practices to be innovative and sustainable. Development isn’t just about solving problems — it’s about changing systems so they no longer create those problems in the first place. Take vocational training as an example: ✅ Helping one person? Teach them. ✅ Scaling impact? Train the trainers. ✅ Creating lasting change? Reform the curriculum. ✅ Ensuring sustainability? Link education with industry needs. At Helvetas, we take a systems approach to development — because real impact happens when local actors drive change. Helvetas’ work in Kosovo’s career counseling system is one example: 25 career centers still operate today, long after project funding ended, because local municipalities saw their value and took ownership. How can INGOs best support system-wide transformation? Read more in this article by Matthias Herr: https://lnkd.in/d7dStzkZ

𝐍𝐄𝐖 𝐒𝐓𝐔𝐃𝐘 ⏩ Improving trail bridge construction by comparing best practices in Ethiopia and Rwanda South-South cooperation among countries with similar opportunities and constraints is a powerful means for improving infrastructure and ending rural isolation. A recently published study in the I.J.B.E. International Journal of Bridge Engineering looks at four categories for trail bridge construction in Ethiopia and Rwanda: 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘮𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦, 𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘶𝘴𝘦, 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘦𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘺, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘦𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴.  𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬: ⏩ Ethiopia's suspension bridges are more costly than their counterparts in Rwanda, but are easy to adjust and maintain; the bridges also excel in their use of local materials ⏩ Rwanda's suspension bridges are notable for the simplicity of the steel tower, foundation connections and main cable anchorage; construction takes less time than in Ethiopia Download the study: https://lnkd.in/gYWMXHxF Thanks to the study's authors and collaborators: Hunde Tamene Diribsa (Helvetas, Addis Ababa University), MUNYANEZA JEAN CLAUDE Bsc Management, Msc, CIPS (Bridges to Prosperity, University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM)), Aflah Mohamoud (Jigjiga University)

  • 🌽 What is the game-changing storage solution that could be the 𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐠𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐡𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫? 𝘏𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘣𝘢𝘨𝘴. For decades, the focus in agricultural development was on boosting crop yields. But a major part of the solution is not what’s grown—it's what’s lost after harvest. In #Tanzania, despite economic growth, hunger persists. One reason is post-harvest losses: Food is grown but never reaches a plate. Small farmers often lose 10% or more of their crops due to poor storage, pests, and contamination. Solutions like hermetic storage bags can prevent these losses, improving both food security and incomes—but adoption remains low. In this article, Felix Bachmann, Agnes Mahembe and Zacharia Nyahende explore Helvetas’ experience in post-harvest management in Tanzania, with a look at what has worked to transform food systems and what didn’t.
