Did you happen to catch "Buy Now: The Shopping Conspiracy" on Netflix this weekend? 😬 As we approach the peak season of consumption, we're inspired by brands taking a stand. Fast Company recently highlighted companies reimagining Black Friday, showcasing innovative approaches to more sustainable consumption. 🌎 🌿 Vestiaire Collective partnered with The Or Foundation to offer a collection of upcycled garments created by Ghanaian designers, drawing attention to fashion waste and challenging definitions of luxury. FREITAG, known for its durable upcycled products, closed both its physical and online stores, instead encouraging customers to exchange bags through their S.W.A.P. initiative. REI continued its tradition of closing on Black Friday, paying employees to spend time outdoors and urging customers to do the same. These kinds of initiatives give us faith in the power of brands to drive change. Our partner, Xscindo, is a good example of innovative approaches to sustainability. Xscindo offers e-waste solutions that ensure both total data destruction as well as the elimination of PFAS emissions - also known as “forever chemicals” - in the process. 🤖💡 Recent studies from Anthropic and Google DeepMind show that when two AI models debate a question, with a simpler model as judge, accuracy improves significantly. This could be a game-changer for building trustworthy AI systems as they become more advanced. While challenges remain, it's a promising step towards "scalable oversight" - ensuring AI alignment. 📚 ✨ This month we snagged an invite for a tour of The Walker Library of The History of Human Imagination, once touted by WIRED as a ziggurat full of treasures. It was stunning and amazing and completely unexpected. Jay Walker is the architect and curator of this collection — formerly of Priceline.com, and currently curator of TedMed. The collection resides in his home in Connecticut, which he constructed to house it. He says human imagination is rooted in our species’ response to two great questions: “Why is the natural world the way it is; specifically the night sky?” and, “What happens to us after we die?” To explain the unexplainable, humans had to visualize the invisible. With that lens he collects pieces that are not typical museum pieces. “These books and objects were selected for their uncanny power to open the mind’s eye… and the result can be thought of as a giant puzzle, where each piece contributes to a panoramic picture, expanding our vision of human imagination.” We tend to think of human imagination as net positive - but, as Walker points out in his tours - imagination is just that. Sometimes an unstoppable force that collectively shifts and moves us miles ahead and sometimes a power that fuels the most ugly and evil behavior in human history. His collection mostly celebrates the positive breakthroughs that further understanding, but all of the thousands of collected items are a fascinating representation of what it means to human. After you pass the crystal ball from the Wizard of Oz (yeah, the real one) you cross a glass bridge into his beautifully designed space - a metaphor for the leap of imagination. And from there ,any one of the thousands of books or objects you point out has a fascinating story — from the first astronauts’ ingenious idea for an insurance policy to a bark tree book on cannibalism to a piece of Alexander Fleming’s mold he sent to a friend for good luck to a napkin sketch FDR scribbled describing his plan to win WWII. As Walker says: “Simply by being human, all of us participate in an ongoing adventure that started when the first human beings began to ask ‘What?’ and ‘Why?’ and ‘Where?’ and ‘How?’” It’s 3600 sq feet of wonder, full of human questions and things that have changed the way people think. As Walker maintains, it is an uncanny power to be able to open the mind’s eye - and given imagination about our future is more important than ever it’s a power worth cultivating. https://lnkd.in/gxWzMwCF #library #innovation #art #WalkerLibrary #treasures #knowledge #learning

🔄✨The future of product design is embracing a more tactile approach, moving beyond sleek digital interfaces to engage all our senses. Tactile design prioritizes material, texture, and weight, creating deeper emotional connections with products while enhancing usability and accessibility. It also addresses the growing consumer desire for tangible experiences. Key examples of this trend include car manufacturers reintroducing physical buttons for safety, Apple adding tactile controls to devices, and retail spaces creating multi-sensory environments. This shift reflects a growing recognition that while digital experiences are powerful, we crave physical interactions that engage our other senses. This challenges us to rethink user experience and innovation. Read more below. #ProductDesign #UserExperience #Innovation #TactileDesign

Creative Director, Richard Nelson here. 👋 I was pleased and honored to attend the Project Osmosis 25th Anniversary Gala on Oct 25 in Chicago. Project Osmosis is a Chicago-based design education initiative which strives to foster the development of young creatives of color and support and guide them into the field of applied arts and graphic design. My long-time friend and fellow SAIC alum, Vernon Lockhart, spearheaded the formation of the organization and serves as the Executive Director. When Vernon and I began our pursuit of graphic design we were fortunate enough to have supportive friends, relatives and teachers who understood that design could be a viable career path and encouraged us to stay on course. Along the way we have discovered that we are a minority in this wonderful field. According to a 2019 survey, only 3% of graphic designers in the US are African American. Project Osmosis aims to impact that statistic by means of community outreach programs and providing resources that expose young people of color to the world of design and educating them in ways they can focus their creative energies. The hope and goal is that they will continue to pursue a career in design. The Gala was a testament to the enduring value and contributions of Project Osmosis and those who have supported it over the years. The evening also reminded us that while we celebrate the accomplishments of the last 25 years there is still much work to do.
