Native American college students are undercounted by 80% in federal data—new federal standards may change that soon. In March 2024, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) released new standards for data in higher education that would clarify and refine our understanding of Native students in colleges and universities. Our new report with The Brookings Institution and the Urban Institute discusses what this means for Native students, and how data can support their success. What you need to know: 🖊️More accurate data helps the federal government uphold its trust and treaty responsibilities to Native American Tribes and Native American people, which includes access to quality education. 🖊️Better data also helps colleges and universities better understand Native American students’ needs and know how to better recruit and retain them. 🖊️Policymakers should publish disaggregated data, partner with Tribal leaders to share data such as Tribal affiliation, and increase guidance and resources for institutions to improve their own data. What is the purpose of Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs)? The classification of HSIs was formally recognized in federal legislation for capacity-building support to improve academic quality and access to excellence at institutions with a high concentration of Latino students. While HSIs, by definition, have student bodies that are at least 25% Hispanic, they serve students of various backgrounds. When students feel like they belong to a campus community, they’re more likely to succeed academically and complete degrees. We spoke with Sushilla Knottenbelt, Interim Associate Dean for Student Success at The University of New Mexico about ways institutions can improve student experience and feelings of belonging, especially among those from historically marginalized groups. Our key takeaways from the interview: 📚Weekly emails from instructors with key deadlines and positive messages can help students stay on track and feel motivated to succeed 📚After particularly difficult exams, allowing students to review and revise their exams can help them develop a growth mindset and gain helpful strategies for future exams 📚Reinforcing to students that, although classes can be challenging, they can persevere and reach difficult goals can help students develop a sense of confidence 📚Implementing strategies like this can create greater equity in institutions through increasing retention and strengthening career pipelines More tips from Dr. Knottenbelt: https://lnkd.in/gfCPHWrz #studentexperience #studentbelonging #collegecompletion #growthmindest #highered
