As we recognize #InternationalWomeninEngineeringDay, hear from Jamie Gentoso, P.E. , MBA, Global Head, Holcim Solutions & Products and President, Holcim Building Envelope, as she shares her journey and encourages diversity in engineering.
What inspired you to become an engineer?
"I have always loved math and science, both of which are about problem-solving. I chose to become a structural engineer because being part of an ever-evolving industry and being challenged to build better was intriguing! Early on, I interned in construction management and was a member of a team that completed several projects that each had a positive impact. I was hooked! I fell in love with a career where I had real purpose and could make a real impact."
What advice would you give young women considering an engineering career?
"First, engineering (and especially construction!) is an excellent career for ALL people. There are many underrepresented minorities in engineering and construction, so my call out is to ALL. We need diverse talent, and it's a great time to join the engineering and construction community as we change how society builds for the better! For a career with a wide range of options for personal and professional growth, impacting how people live and work, and finding sustainable solutions, engineering is a great choice."
The 2024 theme for #INWED is #EnhancedbyEngineering. How is Holcim Building Envelope enhancing the lives of people worldwide?
"Nothing is more central to society as a whole than our built environment. Our products play the most important role in keeping a building air and watertight, and they improve the efficiency and resilience of the building. We currently have the most advanced portfolio of roofing solutions and continue to drive innovation and sustainability through our product lines. For example, our patented Elevate™ ISOGARD™ (roofing insulation) technology provides the greatest R-Value per inch, providing the highest efficiency at the coolest temperatures. Our Malarkey shingles with NEX® Polymer Modified (Rubberized) Asphalt technology are the most sustainable and resilient shingles on the market, outperforming against hail and wind while upcycling 4,200 plastic bags and 5 tires (on average) per roof.
We are continually investing and growing quickly and are focused on creating innovative and sustainable solutions for our stakeholders."
What is your greatest career achievement?
"That’s a hard one, as I am never satisfied and always looking to grow, achieve more and get better! I am so very proud of the growth of Holcim Building Envelope. As a team we have built a North American “rockstar” in advanced roofing systems in just 3 years. We have an amazing team and solutions, but there is always more to do!"
