Really enjoyed presenting on cannabis and land use/zoning with Eric Postow, Esq. at UR Law recently. My remarks drew heavily on my days with James Anthony, running around the Bay Area getting our clients' warehouses permitted for the new era of cannabis regulation in California.

On November 25, 2024, Ramsey County District Court Judge Stephen Smith halted Minnesota's planned cannabis license lottery, which was intended to provide certain applicants with a licensing advantage in the state's emerging marijuana retail market. The decision came after a group of applicants, who had been denied entry into the social equity pre-approval lottery, filed a lawsuit challenging the process's transparency and lack of an appeal mechanism. Judge Smith's ruling prevents the lottery from proceeding as scheduled, allowing time for further legal examination. The Office of Cannabis Management defended its vetting procedures, emphasizing efforts to exclude applicants seeking quick profits over establishing legitimate businesses. Yesterday, I had a wonderful opportunity to listen and learn from some brilliant and experienced leaders in the beverage industry at the 2024 Beer Marketer's Insights Seminar in New York. I wanted to share a few notes I took from Jim Sabia of Constellation Brands. 1. Developing brands starts with investing the time to build a solid foundation. This is a long game strategy that requires discipline and commitment. 2. Truly listening to the consumer combined with a savvy approach to relevant market expansion and disciplined resource allocation are crucial factors for success. 3. Business leaders must focus on the health and consistency at the "core" of the business. If the core is unhealthy the rest will fail.
