He's been called the "godfather of home care" but you may know him as Stephen Tweed, Founder and CEO of Leading Home Care...a Tweed Jeffries company. Listen in as we unpack key trends that are shaping the future of home care.
Recently, Stephen Tweed joined me on Home Care U to talk about 5 macro trends in home care and how they impact providers. We covered: 1️⃣ Workforce ▶ He’s covered this topic in great depth for the last 20 years—is it much worse today? How much worse can it get? ▶ How are leaders doubling down on retention? 2️⃣ Technology ▶ His take on AI. ▶ How providers are embracing remote patient monitoring and Telehealth. 3️⃣ Consolidation ▶ Has the M&A activity slowed down recently? If so, why? ▶ PE has been hot in home care lately—what are the short and long term affects? 4️⃣ Payers ▶ His take on the CMS 80/20 ruling. ▶ Is diversification always the way, or when and how should providers approach diversification cautiously? 5️⃣ Private Caregivers ▶ What has he seen historically vs today? ▶ How big of a concern is this for the future? Throughout the conversation, Stephen cited a recent white paper: The Future of Home Care produced by HOMECAREceo Forum and AxisCare Home Care Software. Download available in the comments. #homecare #homecarebusiness #homecaretrends

I’m still thinking about my conversation with John Bennett. We talked about his experience making 5 acquisitions. He didn’t give me the cookie cutter answers, we got into the nitty gritty and he even opened up about one horror story. I don’t often say this, but there’s something useful for every single home care owner in this episode. (Link in the comments.) One of the insights that stood out to me most were the three most important metrics he looks at while vetting businesses for acquisition. They are: 1. Weekly Hours of Care—Sunny Days In-Home Care tracks weekly hours, some business look at monthly. Regardless, you should know exactly how many billable hours your business has at any given time. From an acquisition lens, John looks at historical weekly hours: have they gone up, down, or stagnated for short or long periods of time. 2. Gross Profile Margin—John looks for a 40% or higher gross profit margin (even for Medicaid clients, who he primarily has). Margins are everything in home care. Too low and you won’t be able to build a scalable business. Too high…well, I don’t think that’s possible in home care. 3. Shift Coverage—how many scheduled shifts are being completed (again, on a weekly or monthly basis). Is it 70%, 80% or 90%+? Sunny Days averages a 98%+ shift coverage rate across their entire org. (Incredible!) When looking for acquisition targets, John would consider it a red flag for agencies with less than a 90% shift coverage percentage. (This is a less-commonly talked about KPI in the industry, we need to change that.) If you’re like me, you’re wondering how people, culture, retention, technology, and processes stack up against this list. I asked John that. Catch the episode for his extended answer. Any large owners/operators who’ve made several acquisitions want to challenge this list? Ari Medoff, Kyle Bossung, Jeffrey Wiberg, Jesse S.T. Walters, Guy Tommasi, Jensen Jones, Gabrielle Hoing, Krystal Wilkinson #homecare #homecarepodcast #homecareacquisitions #m&a

When your first-grade teacher asked what you wanted to be when you grow up, nobody raised their hand and said they wanted to run a home care agency. It's a tough, rewarding, important job that most people ended up in by chance, circumstances, and a desire to earn a living through helping people. John Bennett is no exception. In 2015, he left his job as a high school football coach to help in his in-laws home care business, Sunny Days In-Home Care. Over the next few years, they scaled, systematized, and even made the Inc 5000 Fastest-Growing Companies List. How did John handle the career jump, learn the ropes of a new industry, and succeed? Miriam Allred from our team sat down with him last week to find out. We highly recommend listening to part 1 of the interview—available at the link in our comments or as Home Care U wherever you get your podcasts.
