Protecting Young Children in Car Accidents As crash lawyers, a fair number of our cases involve children who are injured in car accidents. Because of their makeup, younger children are particularly vulnerable to head and neck injuries, even when they are buckled snug in a car seat. In working with pediatric safety experts, we now know that rear-facing child seats are 5 times safer than front-facing car seats. This car seat safety tip is important to know because violent collisions are on the rise. This is due to the staggering increase in the number of distracted and aggressive drivers on the roadway. While a rear-facing car seat is highly recommended, the best way we can protect child passengers is to be on high alert for dangerous drivers, always taking a defensive approach to driving.

As a lawyer who handles more serious injury cases, my clients frequently ask me about compensation for “pain and suffering.” I welcome the question as it brings up important considerations about the case value. But the truth is that “pain and suffering”, no matter how you try and package it, will not significantly contribute to maximizing the injury settlement. Instead, my focus always needed to be on developing the stronger evidence that shows my client’s loss of quality of life. It takes some work, but this is the key to maximizing an injury settlement. Quality of life can be defined in a variety of ways. But there is no doubt that being in good health is at the foundation of “living a good quality of life.   So, it has been my life’s work to advocate for people who have suffered a more serious injury and have lost their good quality of life in the blink of an eye.   Of course, no one would trade their good quality of life for any type of injury settlement, but the best we can do is to maximize the legal recovery for the injured person.   I touch on this below in our new series Maximizing Injury Settlements 2025.

Taking the weekend to prepare a presentation for attorneys who want to take on truck accident cases. The presentation centers on uncovering safety law violations involving trucks and other commercial vehicles. This is important legal work. When attorneys bring to light safety violations, it gives trucking firms great incentive to make safety a priority. This not only helps protects the public at large on the roadways but also protects the drivers that work for trucking and commercial delivery services.

In an effort to reduce the types of teen driver collisions that cause serious injury and worse, I have published a guidebook for parents of teen drivers. It is a free download right here. Although this guidebook is applicable to all, I have written this especially for parents in Missouri. This is meant to help fill the void as Missouri did away with mandatory driver’s education for teen drivers.
