The association is governed by a board of directors and was established in 1981. As the only organization in Iowa dedicated solely to this segment of the health care industry, the Hospice and Palliative Care Association of Iowa positions itself as the voice of end-of-life care in the state and is the best source for information about the business of end-of-life care in Iowa. Whether you're looking for services for yourself or a loved one, a hospice or palliative care provider looking for continuing education or a business who provides services to agencies, the Hospice and Palliative Care Association of Iowa strives to provide needed information and services. At the HPCAI Fall Conference in West Des Moines, members heard updates about the association’s activities and a preview of what to expect in 2025. The new board was also approved. Angie Meyer, Gundersen Health System Home Health and Hospice, was appointed board president. In addition, Katrina Altenhofen, Hospice of Washington County, provided the governance report.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has issued the hospice industry's anticipated FY 2025 final rule, bringing significant updates across various areas, including payment rates, wage index and quality measures. Some highlights from the final rule include a 2.9% increase in payment rates for FY 2025, reflecting a marketbasket increase of 3.4%; finalization of a hospice cap amount for FY 2025 at $34,465.34; implementation of the HOPE data collection instrument starting Oct. 1, 2025, replacing the existing Hospice Item Set; introduction of two new quality process measures based on HOPE data; and changes to the CAHPS Hospice Survey, including the addition of a webmail survey option. Stay tuned for updates about how these changes may affect the industry.

Hospice providers have always been on the front lines, educating referral sources, community partners, consumers and lawmakers about hospice care’s benefits. With the increase in fraudulent actors tricking people into signing up for care they don’t need, educating people about hospice care is more important than ever. Last month, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services began running Facebook ads to alert consumers of bad actors posing as hospice providers. The National Association for Home Care & Hospice-National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization Alliance is monitoring the ads and talking to regulators to ensure bad actors are identified and eligible patients and their loved ones understand the hospice benefit.
