A Message to our Community from Hot Bread Kitchen CEO, Leslie Abbey As we look ahead to the next chapter in our nation’s journey, we know this moment carries different emotions and perspectives for everyone in our community. Our mission at Hot Bread Kitchen has always been rooted in creating pathways to economic opportunity and empowerment for women, gender-expansive people, immigrants, and people of color. This work is driven by our belief in the right to agency, safety, and dignity, and by our commitment to building an inclusive and diverse economy that honors the contributions of all. Personally, and especially as the mother of a first-time voter who is trying her best to understand the divisiveness she is seeing nationally, I am reminded that while social justice is always our north star, we must treat differences – of all kinds – with grace and humanity. No matter where we each stand personally, we remain united in our values: we reject hate, division, and bigotry. We reaffirm our commitment to be a champion and resource to our members, their families and communities. Hot Bread Kitchen will continue to expand our services, reach even more individuals who want our support, and work tirelessly with partner organizations and leaders to achieve our mission. On behalf of all of us at Hot Bread Kitchen, Leslie Abbey

Thank you NYC Employment and Training Coalition (NYCETC), City & State, and Gregory J Morris, MPA for spotlighting Hot Bread Kitchen at the annual workforce agenda conference! In her opening remarks, our CEO Leslie Abbey shared the story of one of our members Eskarli. Eskarli graduated from our Culinary Career Pathways for New New Yorkers program this summer. This program provides hands-on instruction on basic culinary and baking techniques, food safety, and other kitchen fundamentals, specially tailored to the needs of newly arrived, Spanish-speaking New Yorkers with Temporary Protected Status or migrants who are authorized to work. Within a week of graduating, Eskarli was hired at high-end restaurant Casa Cipriani and promoted just a few days later, earning a salary raise. "We as workforce development providers and practitioners have a real responsibility to continue to find ways to be part of a solution in helping solve the workforce challenges many of the people we serve face because, when we do, their lives are really forever changed.” - Leslie Abbey Read more at https://lnkd.in/d7CHajyv

Earlier this year, we launched a program in conjunction with the Mayor’s Office of Food Policy to offer a 5-week plant-based upskilling training to city agencies and their workers. At the completion of the series, all cooks will receive a certification from Hot Bread Kitchen in plant-based culinary skills. We are proud to provide culinary upskilling training that will allow New York City employees to advance their skills and achieve economic mobility, while advancing the Mayor’s Office’s goals to promote plant-based eating to advance the City’s health & sustainability.
