Analyzing published CVEs over the past 15 years of the OFBiz project provides valuable insights into the security of the software: 1️⃣ Ongoing Security Enhancements The CVE data shows that OFBiz is continuously being updated to address emerging security challenges, reflecting the team's commitment to maintaining a secure platform. 2️⃣ Active Monitoring and Popularity The increasing number of CVEs over time highlights that OFBiz is actively monitored and used by a wide range of external stakeholders who diligently identify and report vulnerabilities. The growth in reported CVEs is a positive indicator of the software's continued popularity and widespread adoption.

How does Apache OFBiz handle the OFBiz vulnerability reporting process? First, when a potential vulnerability is reported, it undergoes thorough verification. If confirmed, a Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) identifier is assigned. A CVE is a standardized identifier used to document and track vulnerabilities in software systems, enabling easier sharing of information about threats across the cybersecurity community. Once a CVE is allocated, the OFBiz team develops and implements a fix for the identified issue. This correction is included in the next software release. At this point, the CVE, along with details about the vulnerability and its resolution, is made public.

While there are many benefits beyond cost savings that drive open source adoption, and open source still requires development and maintenance spending, these costs can be lower than those of proprietary systems, especially since there is the clear savings associated with avoiding ongoing recurring licensing fees. Also, for implementation and ongoing enhancements and customizations, this spend may be CapEx as opposed to OpEx, which can be preferable in certain circumstances.

Access to innovation is always around top of the list for reasons why CTOs choose to adopt open source software. This is often due to two factors: access to emerging technologies and knowledge sharing. 💻 Emerging technologies By design, open source systems can be forward looking, ready to integrate with new technologies as they emerge and prove valuable. This includes new UX frameworks, approaches to data management, machine learning, etc. 💡 Knowledge Sharing The ability to work with the experts and influence the very core of the system you are implementing and running can be a big draw for CTOs. A CTO can gain a feeling of security and control knowing they have some influence over the solution itself.
