A peek inside a cooperative R&D project! This picture was taken just yesterday. Our own Lucas Fredrickson is checking on newly hatched Atlantic Salmon (called alevins) at our "Back 40" R&D facility. Right now, the alevins staying close to the bottom of our hatchery tanks. But soon enough, they'll use up the nourishment of their yolk sac and start to swim to the surface to feed. THEN, these little fish will become called "fry," and the real R&D work begins! Our fermented plant based feed ingredient - ME-PRO - has had extraordinary success as a hatchery feed. Key performance indicators such as growth and survivability are well documented — go ahead and ask Alex Tsappis or Marcell B. for details. But in this particular trial, we're going deeper. We have a good idea that ME-PRO will be able to satisfy our particular research partner's above-and-beyond needs and we're going to prove it out. Of course, we want you to stay tuned — we'll share what we can. But in the meantime, we hope this post series might inspire you to ask the hard questions of your own expectations of feed performance and then, hopefully work together! 8,098 🎄 gifts?!? That's the number of little presents that are expected to open up on/near this December 25! The mesmerizing animation of baby Atlantic Salmon eggs was extracted from a video we captured last week, just a few moments before our "Back40" research and development hatchery room went dark (to allow for healthy hatching). Again, there are details behind this trial that need to be kept confidential. But, it is a great example of how we collaborate with industry leaders to find answers to perplexing problems facing the aquaculture industry. Maybe in 2025, we can help you solve a few of your own...? Does "Teamwork make the dream work?" Pretty much... YES. Our "Back40" Research and Development facility is a hub for our innovation in #fermentation, feed production, nutrition... and we don't work alone. The Back40 is place where we collaborate with customers and partners to address the tough challenges at hand. Tomorrow, we start an especially interesting feed trial carefully designed to help leaders in the #aquaculture industry address particularly critical issues. As there's some specificity to this trial that must remain confidential, we can't go into detail. But we are taking this opportunity to set up a series of posts to share more about how we're collaborating to address challenges in the #aquaculture and #petfood 🌎 🌏 🌍. Meeting needs of a different kind... As part of building and sustaining the positive relationships in our workplace, Houdek team members created a 'culture club.' Throughout the year, this independently-run group gets together to learn new things and connect as people-first, colleagues-second. This year, the Houdek Culture Club decided to support "Project Joy" - a toy drive for families who are especially challenged this season. Meeting the needs of our local community shares much in common with meeting the needs of our planet — recognizing the problem, sharing resources to solve the problem, then mobilizing to deliver the solution. Though they're certainly not looking for notoriety, we're proud of our Culture Club and want to share it with our audience as inspiration for the Holidays. A really cool story about the power of innovation, asking questions, and rolling up sleeves and getting to work on real problems... We know fermented ME-PRO is an outstanding protein ingredient for #aquaculture feed. Same thing with our #sustainability and traceability story, same thing with ME-PROs robust amino acid profile. Same thing with ME-PROs ability to help aquafarmers meet or exceed stringent #waterquality requirements. However, a recent study on interaction against lab-cultured pathogens* affecting the #shrimp industry has really put an emphasis that ME-PRO may be only one ingredient in a Nutritionist or Feed Mill's tool box but it provides many benefits! An award over FIVE and a HALF YEARS IN THE MAKING! Our Volga, SD manufacturing plant (ME-PRO®, Protéger™) recently surpassed 2013 days of NO lost time due to injury or accident. The result? Our second year of award with the South Dakota Safety Council - the state chapter of the National Safety Council. Dustin Gibbons Production Manager, John Tirrel, EHS Manager, and Dennis Harstad, VP of Operations represented the whole Houdek manufacturing team at the award ceremony. The official verbiage is: THE GOVERNOR’S WORKPLACE SAFETY AWARDS PROGRAM RECOGNIZES SOUTH DAKOTA EMPLOYERS FOR THEIR ACHIEVEMENTS IN CONTROLLING INJURIES AND ILLNESSES IN THE WORKPLACE. Practically, we were awarded based on our safety performance in incident rates, and in comparison to others in our same industry classification in both the state and nationally.
