Its hard to describe how excited we are to share that our first preprint of results from the mERW/OAE field trial, which Vesta, PBC launched back in 2022, is now available online! This manuscript has significant implications for our understanding of potential co-benefits of OAE, as well as environmental impacts. Keep an 👀 out in the coming months for the published version! https://lnkd.in/eF3CiU76

Conducting critical, independent research for the responsible development of marine CO2 removal strategies
About us
The ocean is our greatest resource for capturing hard-to-abate, and historical, carbon emissions - a non-negotiable part of limiting climate warming to 2ºC. Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (OAE) via alkaline mineral addition has the potential for permanent, gigatonne-scale carbon removal. Targeted, independent, and integrated research that rapidly de-risks the key uncertainties on how to safely deploy mineral-based OAE techniques, while optimizing for fast and efficient carbon removal, is urgently needed to drive climate impact. To do just that, Hourglass brings together an ecosystem of scientists to conduct model, laboratory, and field research for the public benefit.

What a week! Hourglass had its first offsite in Nashville, TN last week! As a largely remote organization, this was such a wonderful opportunity for the team to gather, work, learn, and generally have fun together! We pet farm animals, went for a hayride, worked on crafts, did yoga (thanks for leading Emilia Jankowska!), hiked many trails, visited the Owl's Hill Nature Sanctuary, and did a little science too! : )

Do you live in the UK? Great! Then on Monday night (18 Nov) please tune in to BBC One's program Panorama, which will be airing the episode "Can Scientists Save the World?" and featuring Hourglass Climate's work to monitor an mCDR, ocean-based Enhanced Weathering field trial in North Carolina! Its an honor to be part of a program thats been on the TV since 1953! https://lnkd.in/efW8VjU2

Hourglass' Director of Ecology, Emilia Jankowska, had the pleasure of visiting the Brineworks pilot project on Gran Canaria last week! We loved working with Brineworks this year to develop an approach to environmental impact monitoring for their field trials and are excited to see the progress they are making! Thanks for the invite Gudfinnur Sveinsson!

Hourglass' Executive Director, M. Grace Andrews, had the opportunity to talk with Wil Burns and Anna Madlener on the Plan Sea podcast about our mission, projects, and a whole host of other topics! Take a listen!
In today's episode, hosts Anna Madlener and Wil Burns are joined by M. Grace Andrews from Hourglass Climate. They discuss Hourglass' work on environmental monitoring and carbon removal quantification, as it leads measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) for a significant ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) field trials. In this episode, the Plan Sea hosts and Grace discuss how Hourglass is advancing current OAE field trials, including quantifying the efficacy, assessing the safety of projects, and expanding strategies to effectively share information and communications. To learn more about Hourglass’s work to scale mineral-based OAE techniques, listen to the full episode here:

This was such a well organized and executed workshop on a very important topic! Glad we could attend and contribute. Congrats to the organizers Veronica Tamsitt Jacki Long!
Thanks to all who joined us for the Data Dive workshop in Halifax to collaborate on data standards for ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE). In particular, we want to thank Jacki Long, Veronica Tamsitt and Liqing Jiang for leading a productive and fun agenda. We will apply what we learned during the workshop towards the development of the OAE Data Standards Protocol. We look forward to posting more on that protocol soon.

Hourglass scientist, Dr. Chloe Leach, had a fantastic time at the SeaCURE Abiotic Marine CDR Environmental Impacts Workshop, held at the University of Exeter, discussing critical research gaps and the development of the UK regulatory process for the mCDR field. Many thanks to the SeaCURE organizers!
