May is Deck Safety Month - More on structural integrity - Tension ties and bolting are now required to keep the rim joist from separating. Separation of the rim joists also causes the floor joists to pull loose. Here you can see the joists are barely still sitting on the ledger strip.

May is Deck Safety Month. Proper support is crucial to the structural stability of a deck. Here we have a creative solution to an obstructed support location. This does not provide the proper transfer of weight to the footer and puts stress on the support. Alos the footer itself does not meet the diameter requirements for this construction. The support attachment to the beams is also incorrect. 3 ply beams should be attached with a post cap at the support. Only 2 ply beams can be sitting in a notched 6x6 and the attachment method should be with 2 1/2" thru bolts. We can see what happens when these specs are not followed.
