🌍🔋 The steel industry is one of the world’s largest energy consumers and accounts for 7% of global GHG emissions (IEA, 2020). As a critical component of buildings, bridges, vehicles, and infrastructure, demand is only rising—with a projected increase of over a third by 2050. 🔧 The challenge? Steel production requires extremely high temperatures (1,200°C–1,500°C), and 70% of the industry still relies on coal (The Conversation, 2024). While electric arc furnaces could cut emissions by up to 70% (World Steel Organization, 2023), fully decarbonizing will require new technologies like green hydrogen. But there’s a hurdle: green hydrogen remains costly and not fully scalable. 💡 This is where sustainable finance comes in. By mobilizing capital for green hydrogen R&D and supporting green steel markets, we can accelerate decarbonization. Incentives like subsidies for green steel, carbon taxes, and emissions caps can make sustainable choices economically feasible—creating a pathway to a low-carbon future for steel. #Decarbonization #SustainableFinance #GreenSteel

🌍 Last Friday, COP 16 (the 16th United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity) concluded in Cali, Colombia, marking both significant progress and ongoing challenges. Representatives of 196 countries gathered to push forward the Kumming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), which aims to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030 (adopted in 2022 at COP15). Despite only 44 countries submitting their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs), COP 16 saw notable achievements over the past two weeks.
