There is a well established lack of diverse representation in research and education field of dermatology, and to address this gap, in partnership with Vaseline, we're offering a free, online, CE/CME-accredited Skin Equity & Inclusion Course. This course equips dermatologists with the tools to provide equitable care for all patients by understanding skin conditions across various populations. We invite all dermatologists to learn more about our tools and course and join this mission, helping to foster a more inclusive environment in dermatology. Join the conversation: How can we collectively improve dermatological care for people of color? #Dermatology #MedicalEducation #SkinOfColor #ProfessionalDevelopment #ContinuingMedicalEducation #SeeMySkin

Earlier this month, we had the honor of joining some of the greatest minds in dermatology, along with our partners at Vaseline, as sponsors for the 122nd Annual Convention and Scientific Assembly of the National Medical Association in NYC. This year’s convention focused on the theme of “The Quest for Healthcare Transformation,” and we had the opportunity to co-host an offsite dinner at Trattoria One Fifth in NYC, to continue the celebration. We hosted a panel discussion about the importance of skin equity and how HUED and Vaseline are continuing to make strides in this space. Our founder and CEO, Kimberly Wilson, shares three key takeaways from our event: 1. Importance of Patient Education and Community Outreach: Both Dr. Michelle Henry, MD (Dermatologist; Laser and Skin Surgery Center of NY) and Dr. Dina Strachan, M.D. (Dermatologist; Aglow Dermatology) emphasized the critical role of patient education and community outreach in improving skin care for Black and Brown patients. They highlighted the importance of equipping patients with the knowledge and resources needed to navigate their skin care journeys, reducing the anxiety and barriers that often prevent people of color from seeking care. 2. Underscored the need for Diversity in Skincare Product Development: Tiffany Yizar, Senior R&D Director of Beauty & Wellbeing for Unilever North America – and Co-Lead of the Polycultural Center of Excellence, discussed how Vaseline, through its R&D efforts, is committed to creating products specifically designed for Black and Brown skin, such as the Radiant X line. She underscored the importance of having diverse scientists involved in the product development process to ensure that the needs of these communities are met effectively. 3. Emphasis on including all Dermatological Staff in Continuing Education Efforts: Both Dr. Michelle Henry and Dr. Dina Strachan spoke about how they encourage and champion their staff to take part in professional development opportunities surrounding care for skin of color. We are energized by the education and connections made at this year’s event and are excited to continue to advocate for equity in dermatology alongside members and supporters of the NMA. #NMANYC24 #Dermatology #MedicalEducation #SkinOfColor #ProfessionalDevelopment #ContinuingMedicalEducation #SeeMySkin

According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, cultural competency training improves health care professionals’ knowledge, understanding, and skills for treating patients from culturally and socio-economically diverse backgrounds. In 2023, the VSP Global Innovation Center partnered with HUED, a learning and development startup focused on health equity, to offer their customized, interactive training to a select provider audience. Of the 1,000 optometrists who participated in the pilot, 98 percent said they gained valuable insights on how to better interact with patients and there was a 99 percent increase in providers that said they can now ‘implement and articulate’ the strategies needed to help close the health equity gap. Today, we’re thrilled to reveal that, based on the feedback from providers in the pilot, the customized HUED training is now being rolled out to the entire VSP Vision network. Optometrists that complete the training will receive a continuing education credit (CE), council on optometric practitioner education (COPE) accreditation, and placement on the HUED Directory of Increased Visibility as a Culturally Competent and Humbled Provider. For more information about VSP Vision’s new Cultural Competency and Humility training for VSP network doctors, check out the official announcement here: https://lnkd.in/eBh5XKGF Kimberly N.
