Airports are increasingly focused on enhancing traveler experience, in order to encourage longer dwell time and higher spending inside these busy hubs. In a high-stress environment like a passenger terminal, the need to create a variety of comfortable, engaging, and inspiring spaces can be fulfilled by considering elements of ambiance like lighting, sound, and interactive spaces (which our director of strategy Athena Diaconis recently delved into: https://lnkd.in/dFSb-_BP. The overall goal for airports is to address different traveler requirements—from businesspeople to families—and make the journey from curb to gate feel more enjoyable, inspired and of course, efficient. In this video, HUSH partnerships lead Nile Berry summarizes the recent evolution of contemporary US airport spaces from an experience design perspective, explaining the push for terminals to become diverse experiential destinations in themselves, rather than just a necessary stop along the journey. He explains that this “mall-ification” is less about the retailers themselves, and more about implementing a variety of impactful design shifts in the aesthetic and sensory stimuli that make up the airport environment as a whole. At HUSH, our approach to improving airport experiences is grounded in understanding human behavior and applying a variety of lessons learned from previous projects in many other sectors—arts and placemaking, commercial real estate, and B2C brand activations. Our strategies involve shaping traveler behavior by incorporating art, improved visual/informational cues, and experiences involving storytelling, EDU and play, so that airport terminals reduce anxiety and increase positive sentiment (as well as dollars spent). Using our amalgamation of insights, we’re helping to upgrade the travel experience while accommodating the complexities of modern air travel. Our leadership will continue to publish our ongoing strategic, creative and operational insights. Just reach out on LI or info@heyhush.com if of interest!

Business development is critical in defining the work of a creative studio like ours. Jon Lerner, our director of business strategy, explains how his role extends well beyond selling services and why it requires a deep understanding of the market at large.
Director of Business Strategy at HUSH - We give spaces a powerful voice to amplify an organization’s boldest ideas.
Business development and sales are not interchangeable. I've been doing biz dev at creative studios for a long time. Long enough to have some opinions, if not insights. As an industry, we've never really agreed on what business development really means. So, I tried to take a crack articulating how I approach things at HUSH. Biz dev defines a studio. Sales are things that show up in spreadsheets. #bizdev #strategy #clientservices #knowledge #growth

We're incredibly excited to welcome two new talents to the team, and to shout out a meaningful 1-year milestone. Erica Blumrosen officially joined as a Technical Producer. Her time in Google’s experience team, and leading technology-rich productions prior, makes her a perfect hybrid, fluent in both creativity and technology. Hats on hats. Nile Berry joins us as Partnerships Lead, bringing deep experience in the built environment, from real estate innovation at RXR, RE tech entrepreneurship, and architectural viz and storytelling. He can navigate the ecosystems driving the development of places, spaces and hubs, and connect the value proposition of design, strategy and experience. Lastly, William Rose stuck the landing on his 1-year anniversary, proving himself as a quick study with an entrepreneurial mindset. In just a year, he’s designed everything from airport terminal concepts, sculptural placemaking for a wellness-based transportation hub, and exhibition designs for a leading (and seen in the NYC skies) electric #VTOL brand. Welcome, and thank you all for trusting us with your most precious assets: #time and #brains. 🕛 🧠

⏹️ By itself, a well-designed building has the potential to stand for many things at once: shelter, function, program, beauty, feel, narrative, and a representative of a zeitgeist. But, when placed within a complex urban environment, that same building loses much of its iconic signal; its ability to communicate a story outwardly, and to telegraph a sense of place. 👉 🔳 👈 This is where placemaking and experience design step in as powerful tools for differentiation, resuscitating the idea of buildings as vehicles for communicating world-changing stories, and for incentivizing new behaviors. Placemaking turns space into a memory generator. Experience design visualizes the unseen, and communicates the unheard. 📢 I’ll be digging into these ideas during a presentation I’m giving on Nov 14th at the Cityscape Global Conference in Riyadh, KSA. In many ways, the development happening there represents an extreme drive to transform architecture of epic scale (new cities, structures, and districts) into experiences that outwardly convey the tantalizing (and complicated) narrative of hyper-progress. If you think I should connect with anyone in Riyadh or at the conference itself, please comment them in or DM me. Thank you. #placemaking #architecture #storytelling #experience #design

Ambience is intimately related to the practice of experience design, but is also incredibly difficult to define. Athena Diaconis, our Director of Strategy, has deconstructed its component parts in order to identify the design levers we can use to improve spatial experiences.
For the past three years at HUSH I’ve been working with our brilliant team to create experiences in the world that move people - make them think more deeply, feel something new, act in new ways. We recently took that work and expanded its reach - working at the scale of an airport to determine how to improve the passenger experience through ambience. When faced with solving a rather ambiguous layer of experience design, we started by breaking it down into pieces. Here’s some of what we learned including a framework we created to activate ambience as a powerful and effective tool when designing experiences.
A Framework for Experience: Eight Elements of Ambience
