Avian metapneumovirus (aMPV) is now the leading health issue facing the US turkey industry, according to a recent survey of turkey industry professionals and veterinarians representing 73% of the 218 million birds raised in the US over 12 months ending August 2024. In the US, “all aMPV is not limited to turkeys,” said Steven Clark, DVM, DACPV, HUVEPHARMA, INC. All other categories of poultry — broiler chickens, egg layers and breeder poultry — have been infected, but turkeys are the most significantly impacted. “The ongoing spread of aMPV across major poultry-producing regions in the US and Canada highlights the need for immediate and effective vaccination strategies,” Clark said. For the past 10 years, necrotic enteritis (NE) has consistently ranked as one of the top disease issues in commercial broiler production in the US Animal Health Association Annual Report. Intervention strategies for NE have focused primarily on preventing overgrowth of Clostridium perfringens, the disease’s causative agent, and managing coccidiosis, which predisposes flocks to NE infection. However, the trend toward reducing or eliminating antimicrobial use in broiler production has led to an increased incidence of NE, resulting in the need for alternative intervention strategies, such as vaccination, to control NE.
