About us
Hy-Lo News, which is short for hyper-local news, began in the Spring of 2015 as an alternative news source for urban communities in South Florida. A successful real estate developer and businessman, Sonny Wright was the president and CEO of Universal Real Estate. Georgia born and New York raised, Wright eventually migrated to Miami in the 1950s where he made history as the pioneer behind Miami-Dade County's first Black-owned bank after buying 81 percent of the existing Peoples National Bank of Commerce in Liberty City. He was also the owner of the Carver Hotel in Historic Overtown and local newspaper, South Florida News Week. Wright would also serve on the boards of Florida International University, Miami Board of Realtors, Urban League of Greater Miami, Mount Calvary Baptist Church, and chaired the Florida Real Estate Commission before his death in December 2016. #BlackHistory #BlackHeroes #MiamiDade. .
