We are wrapping up our 2024 Webinar Series with a presentation from Paul Lemestre, Founder and Managing Director, Cleanroom Engineering Design, Inc. Paul has over 28 years of operational experience as a Mechanical Engineer in design, construction, and operations of facilities. His experience with laboratory design includes design of cleanrooms, process piping systems, process exhaust systems, laboratory piping systems, hazardous gas monitoring systems, and HVAC design for specialized ventilation systems. As part of this webinar, Paul will provide an introduction to Vertical Exhausting laminar Flow Hoods and an overview of the SEFA Labs V-ELF standard. Check out these photos from a recent event held by I2SL's National Capital Chapter! Attendees toured the recently renovated E-Wing at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The group heard engaging presentations on NIH Green Labs, cold storage initiatives, and NIH Facilities projects.

Last week, I2SL: International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories honoured individuals working in the lab environment across industry and academia for their initiatives and efforts in the sustainability space. It was an honour to have been nominated for the Phil Wirdzek Sustainable Leader award, and I was humbled to receive the award of Emerging Leader in Sustainability at the event for my efforts in accelerating sustainable science in the pharmaceutical & biopharma industry through my work in driving AstraZeneca's Green Labs program. I am truly proud to work for a company that has such a huge focus on sustainability and has empowered all of its employees to look for opportunities to identify and drive improvements in this space. Through leading our program, I have been presented with an opportunity to work with an incredible team of passionate scientists that are working to cultivate a culture of sustainability across our global sites, lab facilities, scientists, and other teams; reaching thousands of researchers and other employees. Our work to drive positive change has resulted in AstraZeneca leading the industry in the certification of research facilities under the My Green Lab program, resulting in over 100 lab certifications, including 40 that have achieved My Green Lab’s highest level of certification; as well as supporting the pilot and development of My Green Lab's 2.0 certification (to add a further level of data granularity to the process). This has been a fantastic experience for myself and would like to convey my thanks to my peers, colleagues and team that have helped us succeed in driving positive change across our company and industry. The potential for leadership is only possible due to the phenomenal team of highly skilled and dedicated individuals I work with on a daily basis. Green Labs NL wins the I2SL: International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories Award! 🏆 Yesterday was the award ceremony of the 2024 I2SL Sustainable Laboratory Awards and we are very honored to have received the Award for Partnerships and Education. Florijn Dekkers and Joep Sprangers presented a few highlights of our ongoing projects: ➡ We supported over 15 Dutch institutes to implement the LEAF certification tool, which resulted in over 120 labs obtaining LEAF certificates and counting. The LEAF tool helps labs to reduce waste and energy usage and establishes best practice guidelines. 🌿 ➡ We organised an event to spark green movement in the landscape of scientific funders in the Netherlands, with support of Kenniscentrum Global Health (KCGH) ➡ We helped to develop interactive e-modules focused on data management, energy reduction, waste reduction, bias in science, and animal alternatives in research together with the UMC Utrecht. Cancer Research UK is gathering feedback to gain insights on current practices, challenges, and opportunities for sustainability in cancer research as part of the implementation strategy for the UK Concordat for the Environmental Sustainability of Research and Innovation Practices. Responses are anonymous and open to anyone involved in research, especially those involved in cancer research.

I2SL was honored to attend a breakfast showcase at the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science, hosted by Tecniplast, to educate animal lab scientists and others about the benefits of benchmarking a lab building to get a Labs2Zero Energy or Operational Emissions Score and other ways to reduce waste in vivarium facilities.
