FRIDAY TRIVIA - As much of the Western world celebrates Christmas and New Year, in many different cultures, children eagerly anticipate the arrival of Santa Claus bearing gifts. He is also known as St. Nick, Santa, Father Christmas, and with many other names. The origin story of Santa Claus is based on based on the legend of Saint Nicholas, a 4th-century Greek bishop who was known for his generosity and secret gift-giving. However, as the Christmas Museum in the German town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber notes (the image below is from that museum), in the middle ages, in Germany and other cultures, Santa Claus was a rather sinister figure, and one that parents would use to threaten their kids to entice good behavior. So, it's clearly a story of evolution and change. We are glad to see that this story has taken a positive turn. #Sustainability #R2Certification #ResponsibleRecycling

FRIDAY TRIVIA - Canaries are more sensitive to carbon monoxide than humans. That is why they were sent into coal mines to detect poisonous gases, and would show signs of distress before humans did. Even as recently as 1987 this practice existed in the UK. The tradition of using canaries in coal mines dates back to 1911. The cryosphere has also been called the "canary in the coal mine" of the climate system. Birds are excellent indicators of the health of the ecosystem and can provide an early warning system for environmental change. The cryosphere is the frozen parts of the Earth, including glaciers, ice sheets, snow, ice shelves, icebergs, sea ice, lake ice, river ice, permafrost, and seasonally frozen ground. Every organization can increase their sustainability efforts through ensuring they achieve the right types of certification, be it R2 Certification, ISO 9001, or others. #Sustainability #R2Certification #ResponsibleRecycling
