Professor of Constitutional Law, IE University Law School

The ICON•S annual conference last week, organized in partnership with IE Law School at the beautiful IE Tower in Madrid, was important and meaningful to me personally, for many reasons: First, it was the celebration of ICON•S's 10th anniversary. I have been contributing to ICON•S in different capacities since 2015-2016, and I am very proud of what it has become. Second, it was the biggest ICON•S conference ever held (with more than 2000 people coming from 81 countries) and possibly one of the biggest (if not the biggest) public law conferences ever organized. Third, it was held at my beloved home institution, the IE University. I was so proud to be part of the organizing team, along with amazing people like Fernando Pastor Merchante, Sara Junquera Merino, Marie-José Garot, and Sonsoles Arias Guedón. And collaborate with excellent IE Law School scholars like François Delerue, Antonios Kouroutakis, Yuliya Kaspiarovich, Federica Coppola, and many more. Thanks so much to the dean, Soledad Atienza Becerril, and to the rector, Salvador Carmona, for their unconditional support. Fourth, I was very proud of seeing how the excellent ICON•S team has consolidated itself with hard-working friends like Michaela Hailbronner, Amal Sethi, Anna Pirri Valentini, Evan Rosevear, Irene Parra Prieto, Gustavo Buss, Johanna Fröhlich, Mariana Canales, Marianne Poehls Risco and many others. It will be a pleasure to continue working with them. Good things to come for ICON•S ! Fifth, it was my last conference as a Secretary General of ICON•S, working under the guidance of some of the best comparative constitutional law scholars in the world, the former co-presidents, Richard Albert and Marta Cartabia, and the deputy Secretary General, Michaela Hailbronner. I have been lucky to work with all the former co-presidents of ICON•S: Joseph Weiler, Sabino Cassese, Gráinne de Búrca, Ran Hirschl, Lorenzo Casini, and Rosalind Dixon. I had the best mentors! Sixth, the conference marked my start as a co-president of ICON•S, along with my friend Michaela Hailbronner, and the new Secretary General, the great Erin Delaney, one of the comparative constitutional law scholars I admire the most. The wonderful Amal Sethi, Anna Pirri Valentini, and Evan Rosevear, are the new deputy secretary generals. One cannot ask for a better team. Thanks so much to the ICON•S leadership for trusting me and to the ICON•S community for helping to build one of the most exciting and enriching organizations I have ever had the pleasure of being a part of.

⭕️📌 The 10th ICON•S Annual Conference is already underway since yesterday at #IETower, IE University in Madrid. The prestigious event organized and hosted by IE Law School this week focuses on ‘The Future of Public Law: Resilience, Sustainability and Artificial Intelligence’. 🎉More than 2,000 people registered for the conference from July 8th-10th and attended panels and talks yesterday leveraged by great public law professionals from around the world. ‘With this conference, we wish to contribute to strengthening the links within a global community of academics and jurists in all areas of public law, including international law, constitutional law, and administrative law. We believe that legal academics and professionals must play a relevant role in society, and that global issues such as sustainability and artificial intelligence, and their impact on society, should be discussed and analyzed from a public law perspective’, shared Soledad Atienza Becerril, Dean of IE Law School. ‘The ICON•S Annual Conference is the premiere festival of ideas for all areas of study in public law. You will be treated to hundreds of panels over the course of three days, covering a rich variety of subjects in administrative, constitutional, international law and beyond’, commented Richard Albert and Marta Cartabria, Co-Presidents of ICONS. Yesterday we enjoyed the Welcome and Opening Remarks by Fernando Pastor Merchante, Vice Dean of IE Law School, and Soledad Atienza, Dean of IE Law School. The keynote speech, ‘Human Rights in Times of Trouble: Some Reflections on Sustainability and Resilience’ was given by Siofra O’Leary, President of the European Court of Human Rights. The first Plenary Panel 'Sustainability, Climate Change and Human Rights’ welcomed insights from Imani Daud Aboud, President of the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights, Nancy Hernández, President of the Corte Interamericana de Derechos Humanos Corte IDH and Siofra O’Leary. It was moderated by Eleanor Sharpston, Advocate General at Court of Justice of the European Union. The day finished with a welcoming cocktail reception at the IE Tower Garden to allow colleagues to meet each other and share thoughts about the day. Many thanks to all the speakers, participants and collaborators for the success of this first day. 🗓️ Today we hope to enjoy another full day of experiences and learning. See you in the LGTBIQ+ Breakfast Reception and Women’s Lunch Reception, and all day in the Parallel sessions. Read the key information about de Conference: https://lnkd.in/eTxDbBzX
