Dr. Vinay Badhwar, MD, FACS, an ACS Fellow and executive chair of the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute, has led his team in performing the world’s first combined robotic valve replacement and coronary artery bypass operation. Using a cutting-edge robotic cardiac platform that Dr. Badhwar helped develop, the procedure was performed on a 73-year-old patient with severe aortic insufficiency, coronary artery disease, and challenging health conditions, including prior stroke and frailty. This minimally invasive surgery involved a single 4 cm incision, showcasing the potential for transformative care in high-risk patients. This milestone reflects WVU’s dedication to advancing the field of cardiovascular medicine through innovation and expertise. #cardiacsurgery #medicalinnovation #roboticsurgery #healthcare

The holidays are a time for joy, family, and... questionable medical decisions? Okay, maybe that’s a stretch, but a new study sheds light on how even doctors—being human—can be influenced by cognitive biases, especially around holidays. This time, the focus isn’t on Christmas or Hanukkah but Halloween. Researchers explored whether kids are more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD when they visit the doctor on October 31st. While the findings are specific to Halloween, the bigger takeaway applies year-round: awareness of biases in medical practices can help us make better, more informed decisions. "Anupam Jena is one of the co-authors of this new study (with Christopher Worsham and Charles Bray). Jena is a professor of health care policy at Harvard Medical School. He's both a physician and and economist, which means he spent an ungodly amount of time in graduate school. But it also makes him uniquely qualified to study the behavioral economics of our health care system. Jena and his coauthors have long used the tools of economics — in particular, analyzing "natural experiments" and crunching "Big Data" — to document startling facts about the sometimes flawed decision-making of doctors. For instance, in one study, Jena found that physicians suffer from "left-digit bias." This is the same bias that businesses exploit when they price something at $4.99 instead of $5.00." #healthinsights #medicalbias #holidayseason

The rise of wearable technology is revolutionizing how we integrate tech into daily life—including in the operating room. Thanks to advances in miniaturized components, these devices now collect, store, process, and share data seamlessly, making them invaluable tools for surgeons. From accelerometers to gyroscopes, wearable devices like activity trackers are already making waves in various fields. But for surgeons working in sterile environments, the potential is even greater. Imagine wearables designed to enhance precision, monitor fatigue, or provide real-time feedback during procedures. While the opportunities are exciting, barriers like cost, training, and ensuring sterility remain. What will it take for wearable tech to truly disrupt surgical practice? #healthcare #healthtech #medicalnews

As demand for weight-loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy skyrockets, some patients are taking matters into their own hands by "microdosing" these injectables. Microdosing involves taking smaller doses of medications like semaglutide to reduce side effects, cut costs, and still achieve weight-loss goals. While some users swear by its effectiveness, the trend has caught the attention of medical professionals, sparking both intrigue and concern. "There’s a growing desire for ultra-personalization," says Andrew Kraftson, clinical associate professor at Michigan Medicine. "But we currently lack guidance to support microdosing as a safe, self-directed approach." With this unconventional practice on the rise, the conversation around personalized medicine and weight-loss solutions continues to evolve. What are your thoughts on this trend? Finding the right doctor goes beyond credentials and awards—it’s about connection. 🩺 Is your doctor really meeting your health needs? Building a relationship with your doctor is just as important as the care they give. As Dr. Anthony Orsini, a doctor-patient communication expert says: “Patients need to feel seen, heard and valued—not just another number in the system.” In today’s fast paced healthcare world where doctors spend more time on data entry than face to face with patients (36 minutes on records vs 15 minutes with patients) making the most of those moments is key. #healthcare #patient #selfcare #doctors
