𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲 – 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐈 𝐒𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐲? Several myths purport to explain the origin of #BlackFriday – including a financial crisis and 1950s shopping sprees which turned criminal...Now the meaning has regained the connotation of moving the books from “red to black” with massive revenues generated by a post Thanksgiving shopping blitz. However dark clouds hover over this shopaholic dream. Namely the harmful impact on the atmosphere with a burst of carbon emissions from increased manufacturing, packaging, transportation and returns. A recent analysis quoted in Forbes concluded that 1.2 million tons of CO2 would be emitted by trucks transporting Black Friday packages to warehouses and stores around Europe – 94% more than in an average week. Plus, Black Friday's inherent consumerism lends itself to overconsumption and impulsive buying, leading to waste. However– my hypocrisy is starting to burn as I sit here with a full digital cart. There are also benefits to Black Friday of course- economic stimulus, seasonal employment, inventory clearance and consumer savings. But in the round it’s an exaggerated example of trends which are harming are planet at an alarming rate. So, how can technology help? Planning Scheduling Optimization (PSO) is a powerful algorithm-driven solution for mitigating Black Friday's environmental toll. By optimizing delivery routes in real-time, it minimizes fuel consumption and reduces emissions. Simultaneously, it can dynamically allocate manufacturing tasks, adjust warehouse operations and schedules delivery fleets based on inventory, capacity and location data. This not only prevents delays and overproduction but slashes transportation inefficiencies. This extends to reverse logistics, ensuring that returned goods are efficiently routed. It determines whether items should be restocked, refurbished, or recycled, reducing landfill contributions and maximizing recovery value. Demand forecasting addresses the upstream challenge of anticipating consumer needs before goods are even produced or shipped. #AI analyses historical data, market trends and consumer behaviour to predict demand with precision. This enables retailers to manufacture and stock only what is needed, reducing waste and ensuring PSO systems are optimizing the right inventory at the right time. AI-powered robots can also play a critical role in supporting circular economy principles. They can accurately identify and sort recyclables, ensuring more efficient material recovery and reducing the environmental impact of waste. This helps extend the lifecycle of materials used in products sold during Black Friday. Lastly, AI can minimize the environmental footprint of e-commerce operations during high traffic surges, making them more sustainable. This works by monitoring energy usage in data centers to optimize workload distribution, cooling systems and renewable energy integration.

Sustainability was a key topic on the agenda at #IFSUnleashed 2024. I shared insights on why #sustainability is a competitive advantage that enhances investment performance, highlighting the role of technology in helping asset-heavy industries to reduce emissions by optimizing processes and resources, as well as modelling new ways of working. We're witnessing a global shift towards a green economy - bumpy, but with a clear direction of travel. In the process, much like the digital transformation, there will be both winners and losers. The winners are those companies who are embracing the potential of digitalization and Industrial AI to drive more sustainable ways of operating: informing decisions about the day-to-day as well as the 20-year horizon for their business. I was delighted to be able to speak with many such companies at #IFSUnleashed2024 and take inspiration from those who are accelerating our progress towards a sustainable future.
