Dr. Beth Gross shares her advice for young #geotechnical engineers and her journey as Geosyntec Consultants’s first woman engineer - don’t miss her inspiring story!
Dr. Beth Gross, of Geosyntec Consultants, sits down with us in our latest ‘10 Minutes With…’ video. With nearly 40 years in the business, Beth shares her advice for those just entering the #geotechnical engineering industry, she recounts her experience starting out as the first woman engineer at Geosyntec in 1987, and also shares her encounters with industry pioneer J.P. Giroud. The ‘10 Minutes With…’ video series, is a spin-off of our ‘10 Questions With…’ articles offering a deep dive into the working lives of #geosynthetics professionals. https://lnkd.in/g54fS2TB #10MinutesWith #geoengineering

Student award winners - GeoAmericas 2024! Let's get to know an award winner and his work! The title of Dawie Marx’s presentation from The University of Texas at Austin was: A sensitivity analysis of the parameters contributing to load development in geogrid pullout testing. Dawie Marx stated in his presentation: “We analyzed a dataset of geogrid pullout tests to determine the factors that affect load development during pullout. We found that the load development was the most sensitive to the stiffness of the geogrid, the friction angle of the soil, the spacing of the geogrid ribs, the confining stress and the average particle size.” He also mentioned that the conference allowed him to connect with new young members, expand his network, and interact with geosynthetics leaders. He looks forward to meeting these colleagues at future IGS events. Work Experience Success For Latest Job Shadowing Cohort On March 8th, 2024, Débora Toledo, a Civil Engineering student at the Federal University of São Carlos and IGS Brasil member, had the opportunity to participate in the International IGS Job Shadowing Program. With the support of Bidim Wavin Geossintéticos, Débora experienced a full workday at the company, learning about the manufacturing process of non-woven geotextiles, polymer injection, needling, and all the intricate details involved in geotextile production. At the company, she was supervised by Engineer Michele Pires. Débora shared, “Although I had studied this process in classes and books, seeing it in person made everything much clearer and more understandable.” Another highlight was her visit to a construction site, where she gained insight into the challenges and processes involved in using geosynthetics in civil engineering. IGS Brasil - Assoc. Brasileira de Geossintéticos and Young Member Committee extends its gratitude to Bidim Wavin Geossintéticos for their support in making this possible. The Job Shadowing Program is organized by the IGS International, Young Member Committee and funded by the IGS Foundation.

Do you know who are IGS Membership? IGS Membership is divided into three categories: corporate, chapters and individuals. - The Corporate membership of the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS) shows that your business is committed to furthering the appropriate use of geosynthetics around the globe. Corporate membership directly supports the educational programs and resources produced by the IGS. They also gives your business access to the greatest network of geosynthetics experts in the world. From members of prestigious universities to international subject matter experts, you will have first-hand information of all the latest industry developments. - There are 45 IGS Chapters. The North American and the Nordic Chapters cover several countries. In total IGS Chapters represent 50 Countries spanning all regions. Each Chapter has its own membership process and the fees are payable in local currency. Please visit the Chapter’s page to learn more and join! - The individuals members are present in the world where there is no IGS chapter or friendly companies yet. Not a member yet? This year marked the exciting debut of the #GeoJeopardy competition, testing young engineers’ knowledge of #geosynthetics in a lively quiz show format! The competition at #GeoAmericas2024 featured live rounds, with expert geosynthetics professionals acting as quizmasters, guiding student teams through a series of heats during the conference. Curious about what GeoJeopardy entails? It’s inspired by the classic American #Jeopardy! game show, flipping Q&A formats to keep contestants on their toes – they must answer with a question! For example, when prompted with “1983,” the correct response would be: “What year was the IGS established?” The goal is to foster student engagement at events and advance geosynthetics knowledge worldwide. Any student competition that inspires interest and learning is encouraged! Interested chapters can reach out to the IGS Secretariat for guidance.
