About us

Illinois Stewardship Alliance - Promoting family farmers and local food systems The Illinois Stewardship Alliance promotes ecologically sustainable, economically viable, socially just local food systems through policy development, advocacy and education. We advocate for local farmers and educate local consumers to promote the establishment of sustainable local food systems in the state of Illinois through programs and legislative work. We are an alliance of individuals and institutions concerned with agriculture, health, nutrition, community and economic development, social justice, the environment. Food is a holistic issue that touches all of us. Every person eats and every day we make a choice whether we will be passive consumers of food or active food citizens. Updates

  • There are so many good reasons small and diverse farms struggle to access USDA NRCS programs that support farmers in protecting soil and water. Check out this new report by our friends at Rural Advancement Foundation International (RAFI) 👇

On December 10, USDA’s Economic Research Service (ERS) launched a new report, “America’s Farms and Ranches at a Glance: 2024 Edition.” The study offers a snapshot of the 1.9 million farms in the United States for the year 2023, with new insights on farm household finances, technology adoption, and the ongoing challenges faced by small and mid-sized family farms in a changing agricultural landscape. The report shows that while small family farms play a major role in the U.S. agricultural economy, they need support to meet the ongoing challenges of financial vulnerability and increasing corporate consolidation. The findings of the new ERS report underlines the need for policies that better support small farms, promote equitable access to resources, and ensure their viability in an increasingly competitive agricultural landscape. https://bit.ly/3BCYb7X

🌟 Celebrating Conservation Excellence! 🌟 When our conservation attorney, Matt Ruhter, is off the clock with Openlands, he is still busy with conservation work through his family business, Rhuter Bison. The partnership between McHenry County Conservation District and Ruhter Bison LLC received this year's Best of the Best Award from the Illinois Association of Park Districts! 🏆 This innovative collaboration uses grazing bison to regenerate grasslands, improve soil health, enhance carbon sequestration, and restore prairie ecosystems. 🌱 Learn how partnerships like these are shaping the future of conservation! 👉 https://ow.ly/IL2I50UmMLN #Conservation #Bison #GrasslandRestoration #Sustainability

🌟 Big News: The Chicago Food Justice Summit Call for Speakers is Extended! 🌟 I'm jazzed to share that the deadline for submitting proposals for the 20th Annual Chicago Food Justice Summit has been extended to Sunday, December 15th @11:59 PM CST! This year’s theme, “New Growth, Old Roots,” invites us to dig deep into how innovation and tradition intersect in creating a just, equitable, and sustainable food system. But here’s the thing: you don’t have to fit the theme to submit! We’re calling on everyone in the food system—from eaters to growers, advocates to organizers, researchers to policymakers—to bring your unique perspectives to the table. Let’s use this milestone year to elevate all the intersections of food and social justice. Grassroots organizing? Submit it. Policy deep dives? Let’s hear it. Stories of resilience, transformation, and collective action? We want it all. This Summit is about building momentum toward food sovereignty for all, and your voice is essential to that work. ✨ Submit your session proposal soon, or share this with someone whose work deserves the spotlight! Let’s make this year unforgettable. RFP 🔗: https://lnkd.in/gh53_XuX

  • You, your idea, your farm, or your organization could be front and center at the upcoming annual Soil Health Week in March 2025! The application is now open for you to propose an event, workshop, speaker, screening, field day, or anything you dream up to celebrate one of our state’s most precious resources: our soil. 🪱 🌱 👉 Submit Your Event Proposals Here: https://lnkd.in/gtKmHeu7 Last year, 22 partners hosted over 30 events during the week. Soil enthusiasts had the opportunity to attend in-person and virtual farm tours, dive deep into climate discussions, and hear from experts across the U.S. on why soil should be protected and celebrated. We are keeping Soil Health Week Host tradition going by giving you the opportunity to bring your soil ideas to the table and make Soil Health Week a powerful celebration that reaches even more audiences across the state.     What do you need in order to host an event during Soil Health Week? 🥕 An event idea! Events may be virtual or in-person. Perhaps a presentation on a topic relating to soil health or climate change, a coffee chat to discuss best practices, an invite to a farm tour/field day, or something else entirely. 🥕Propose a date and time during March 3-9. You may need to be flexible to accommodate multiple events. 🥕Have a location in mind (online or in-person) 🗓️ Proposals are due on February 10th. 🗓️   🚦 If your event is given the green light, here’s what you can expect: ✅ A unique online registration form for your event that you can share widely ✅ Marketing toolkit for you to use to promote your event complete with tips and template copy to promote your event. The Alliance can offer some marketing support too! ✅ Optional biweekly calls for hosts and event planning committee to receive support ✅ Your logo and social media handles added to Soil Health Week material Learn more and submit your proposal here: https://lnkd.in/gtKmHeu7
