Congratulations to Drs. MacCumber, Minaker and Shepherd on being published in this month's Ophthalmology Retina! Their article "Risk of Proliferative Vitreoretinopathy in the Second Eye in Adult Patients with Bilateral Retinal Detachment" discusses their study where they found that patients with a history of history of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment with proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) in one eye were 3.5 times more likely to develop PVR after a detachment in their fellow eye. This is a potential patient population that would be ideal to treat with prophylactic anti-PVR treatments or medications. Thank you to Illinois Retina Associates for giving me the opportunity to share information about the Foundation Fighting Blindness at their Retinal Update on Sunday morning. Optometrists from throughout Illinois joined live and remotely to hear updates on retinal research. It was very nice to see Dr. Claire Gelfman (formerly of the Foundation Fighting Blindness) as the keynote speaker. She highlighted a lot of our contributions to the advancement of inherited retinal disease research. Nice seeing you Claire! The highly successful Advocacy Ambassador Program promotes advocacy engagement at both the federal and state levels by Academy members-in-training. Ambassadors participate in the Academy's annual Mid-Year Forum, including Congressional Advocacy Day visits and the L.E.A.P. (Leadership, Engagement, Advocacy, Practice Management) Forward session. Ambassadors are then encouraged to take their new skills ‘back home’ and advocate for patients and the profession through active engagement within their state ophthalmology societies.
