Supporting Children and Families Coping with Loss... so no child grieves alone.
About us
NJ Grief Support Center - Imagine is a free, year-round, trauma-informed children's grief support center located in Mountainside, NJ and serving all of Union County and beyond, for children ages 3-18 and young adults ages 18-30 who are coping with loss due to the death of a parent or sibling. Concurrent grief support groups are available for the parents, guardians or other caregivers of the youth served, and for parents that have had a child die. We also provide support for children and families who have a family member (child or adult) living with a life-altering physical illness. Imagine is a community-based program that uses the peer support group model, the healing arts, physical play, community service, retreats, and education to provide a safe and healing environment for coping with the painful and complicated feelings that accompany loss. Children, teens and adults learn lifelong healthy coping skills, build on their natural resilience, and make meaning from their loss that allows for growth, healing and transformation. Part of our mission is to normalize grief in our society and to "seed" our communities with compassionate listeners that know how to support children, teens, and adults coping with any type of loss including death. To that end, we provide education and training to the public, primarily in schools and agencies, so that they are better equipped to respond when they encounter grieving youth. We also provide onsite support at schools, houses of worship, workplaces, etc., when there has been a death or other traumatic event. Additionally we provide workshops and lunch and learn presentations in business and corporations on the topic of "Grief in the Workplace." At Imagine we believe that no child should grieve alone, and we are working every day to ensure that wherever a child, teen, or young adult turns in their life, that there will be a compassionate adults and peers that will be able to offer support and bear witness to their loss.

Last weekend, we had the pleasure of welcoming a new cohort of volunteer facilitators following an enriching three-day training session at our Mountainside center. This training prepares volunteers to provide support for both children and adults who are experiencing grief. Help us welcome them to the Imagine Family! #ImagineNJ #GriefSupport #NoOneShouldGrieveAlone

Family is the cornerstone of our identities and supports us throughout life. Shared stories, traditions, and love create a tapestry of experiences that connect us to our past and guide future generations. In a complex modern world, these familial bonds offer strength, resilience, and a sense of belonging, reminding us of our roots. #MindfulMonday #ImagineNJ #BlackHistoryMonth

“This is my first year as an Imagine volunteer. I am in awe of the courage of the participants in sharing their stories and feelings. It’s amazing. I have also found the support of fellow facilitators to be invaluable. I'm learning every session.” —Imagine Volunteer #ImagineNJ #GriefSupport #NoOneShouldGrieveAlone

Giving back and contributing to others' well-being is vital. Kindness and generosity foster connection and harmony, with small acts like helping neighbors or volunteering making a significant impact. Embracing this philosophy enriches communities and gives meaning to our lives. On this President’s Day, we remember Shirley Chisholm, the first African American woman to run for President, recognizing her commendable dedication and service as a Congresswoman. #MindfulMonday #ImagineNJ #BlackHistoryMonth

We’re aiming to spread some love this Valentine’s Day, February 14th, by welcoming 14 new monthly donors! Will you be one of the fabulous 14 to open your heart and join the party? Here’s a love story! Lyrica's heart danced with joy as she planned her wedding, yet shadows of sorrow lingered, echoing the absence of her beloved brother, Kaz. In a tender tribute, Lyrica chose to weave Kaz’s shirt into her bouquet as her "something blue," a shimmering connection to his memory. Additionally, she established a fund within her wedding registry in Kaz’s name to uplift the noble cause of Imagine. When asked about her choice of Imagine, Lyrica shared, “We chose The Imagine Center because it provides a space to connect with others who have experienced loss, helping you feel less alone. It also offers a supportive environment to release your emotions, which is both powerful and important. Having friends to lean on who have also experienced a loss can be so healing. Thank you Imagine!” Be 1 of the 14 this month! https://bit.ly/40XFMNr #GiveLove #ImagineNJ #GriefSupport

A heartfelt thank you to our cherished friends at Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel of South Orange. They graciously hosted a service day, where their talented youth crafted personalized journals for our Imagine participants. Journaling is a beloved practice we nurture here at the center. It is through the generosity of partners like them that we can continue to offer our free grief support services at Imagine. #ImagineNJ #GriefSupport

A hero's journey is often marked by sacrifice, courage, and empathy, serving as a beacon of hope and inspiration for others. Each decision made by a hero echoes with the promise of a brighter future and the belief that even in the darkest times, light can prevail. #MindfulMonday #ImagineNJ #BlackHistoryMonth

"Working for the Imagine Grief Center has been both a pleasure and a learning experience. I'll never take for granted the grace to sit into the seminars and learn about why mental health matters. I'll also never take for granted the opportunity I got to understand why it's important for a community to have a safe place to be able to safely express themselves. Ms. Indira thank you for being a superwoman and ensuring that everyone who comes to the Newark Center feels cared for. Thank you for always going the extra mile to ensure everything is at the highest quality possible. Thank you for always putting your best foot forward and always aiming to make things better everyday.” —Muyiwa, Imagine Intern #ImagineNJ #GriefSupport #NoOneShouldGrieveAlone
