About us
Immunize.org (formerly Immunization Action Coalition) established its website (www.immunize.org) in 1994. It is a nonprofit organization that works to increase vaccination rates and prevent disease through advocacy and education. Immunize.org creates and distributes educational materials for healthcare professionals and the public that enhance the delivery of safe and effective vaccination services. Immunize.org advocates for policies that remove barriers to access to vaccinations for people of all ages and facilitates communication about the safety, efficacy, and use of vaccines within the broad immunization community of patients, parents, healthcare organizations, and government health agencies. For more than three decades, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has worked in concert with and provided financial support to Immunize.org for the purpose of educating healthcare professionals about U.S. vaccine recommendations. IZ Express is the free weekly e-newsletter produced by Immunize.org with over 54,000 subscribers. IZ Express keeps you informed about important vaccine updates from CDC and FDA. In June 2021, ACIP voted to recommend Dengvaxia for routine use in children age 9 through 16 years with laboratory-confirmed previous dengue virus infection and living in areas where CDC has classified dengue as endemic. The recommendation is only for persons with confirmed previous DENV infection because Dengvaxia is associated with an increased risk for severe dengue in those who experience their first natural infection (i.e., primary infection) after vaccination. The vaccine is not approved for use in U.S. travelers who are visiting but not living in an area where dengue is common. The most current ACIP recommendations for Dengvaxia are available at https://lnkd.in/ex89j2wK. CDC has developed a pre-vaccination checklist for evaluating whether a child should receive Dengvaxia: https://lnkd.in/eCrk9p6M. Dengvaxia (Sanofi) is a live-attenuated, chimeric tetravalent dengue vaccine built on a yellow fever 17D backbone. It is designed to protect against all four DENV serotypes. It was licensed by the FDA in May 2019 for children and adolescents age 9 through 16 years with a confirmed history of previous dengue infection. FDA lowered the youngest age for licensed use from 9 years to 6 years in 2023; however, CDC’s recommendations to begin routine vaccination of children with serologic evidence of prior dengue infection at age 9 years remains unchanged. The recommendation for vaccination is restricted to people age 9 through 16 years with confirmed previous DENV infection because Dengvaxia is associated with an increased risk for severe dengue in those who experience their first natural infection (i.e., primary infection) after vaccination. In 2024, Sanofi announced plans to discontinue production of Dengvaxia in the third quarter of 2026 due to low global demand. Other dengue vaccines are in late stages of development; however, there are no other licensed dengue vaccines available in the United States.
