This week in our #FungalEducationFridays series, we want to devote special attention to the impact of climate change on global fungal disease. 📖 Today's post provides a brief summary of a new publication, Climate Change and Medical Mycology, authored by Sarah Sedik, MS, Matthias Egger, MD, and Martin Hoenigl, MD, FECMM, FIDSA, and published in Infectious Disease Clinics of North America. The paper explores how rising temperatures, shifting precipitation patterns, and natural disasters are driving the emergence of new fungal pathogens, altering disease patterns, and exacerbating health disparities worldwide. Find the full article here: https://hubs.ly/Q031-Vhz0 IMMY is especially mindful of this issue as devastating wildfires in Los Angeles highlight the far-reaching impacts of climate change. Beyond the immediate destruction, such disasters contribute to fungal spore dispersal, increasing the risk of infections like coccidioidomycosis (Valley fever) in nearby communities. 🌍 Climate change is fundamentally reshaping the landscape of fungal diseases, creating unprecedented challenges for global health. Rising global temperatures are enabling fungi to adapt to warmer climates, leading to the emergence of thermotolerant pathogens like Candida auris and Cryptococcus deuterogattii. Geographic ranges of diseases such as Valley fever, histoplasmosis, and blastomycosis are expanding, while extreme weather events like hurricanes, floods, and wildfires exacerbate fungal exposure risks. Compounding these challenges, antifungal resistance is rising due to intensified agricultural fungicide use, complicating treatment options. Vulnerable populations, particularly in low-resource settings, face the greatest risks as climate change amplifies health disparities. ⌚At IMMY, we recognize the urgency of these challenges. Early diagnosis and surveillance are critical to combating fungal diseases in a warming world. By providing affordable, accurate diagnostic solutions, we empower healthcare providers to detect infections early, improve patient outcomes, and reduce disease spread. The fight against fungal diseases in a changing climate is a global challenge, but through collaboration, innovation, and dedication, we can make a difference. Together, we can protect communities, save lives, and build a healthier future. #ClimateChange #FungalDiagnostics #GlobalHealth #EarlyDetection #IMMYDiagnostics #ThinkFungus #TestFungus

IMMY is excited to share a new study co-authored by our Latin American representative, Diego Caceres, published in Medical Mycology. The study, titled "Evaluation of a commercial Histoplasma antigen detection enzyme immunoassay for the follow-up of histoplasmosis treatment in people living with HIV from Argentina," highlights the value of antigen detection assays in improving outcomes for HIV patients with histoplasmosis. This research evaluated the Histoplasma Galactomannan (GM) EIA kit for monitoring treatment response in 27 patients over 24 weeks. Results showed a significant correlation between decreasing antigen levels and clinical improvement, supporting the kit's potential as a reliable tool for treatment monitoring. Today's topic for #FungalEducationFriday: Fungal Diseases in Animals: A Multifaceted Challenge 🐾 Fungal infections pose serious threats to animals, ranging from domestic pets to wildlife. While less common than bacterial or viral infections, fungal diseases can be equally dangerous, impacting animal health and ecosystems. Common Fungal Diseases in Animals 1️⃣ Aspergillosis Caused by Aspergillus fumigatus, this disease affects species as diverse as dogs, cats, birds, and horses. Birds are especially vulnerable due to unique respiratory systems, making aspergillosis a major concern in zoos and wild populations. 2️⃣ Candidiasis Candida albicans is an opportunistic pathogen causing localized or systemic infections in birds, cattle, and other animals, often linked to stress or medical interventions. 3️⃣ Coccidioidomycosis Also known as Valley Fever, this disease is caused by Coccidioides spp. and affects humans and animals alike, particularly dogs. Accurate diagnosis in dogs not only improves their quality of life but also enhances mapping of endemic regions. IMMY's Coccidioides Ab Lateral Flow Assay (LFA) has been validated in canine studies as a rapid, accessible diagnostic tool. A comparative study by Diego Hernando Caceres Contreras and Mark Lindsley highlighted the LFA’s utility: ➡️Accuracy: 82% ➡️Rapid results with minimal lab infrastructure, making it an ideal screening tool.
