Thank you to Milcah Lalam, Jolie Sifa K. Amisi, and Jessica Lembelembe for participating in a panel on strategic partnerships during Saturday's NYOTA session. We covered a lot of ground. Here are just a FEW nuggets from Milcah, Jolie, and Jessica:
- An organization's strategic plan along with its values will inform the kinds of partnerships the organization wants to pursue. And those partnerships need to be pursued and developed with intentionality, otherwise "no one is going to follow up with anything you said you wanted to do."
- Support from the organizations' leaders is crucial for partnership success. Management, operational, execution levels can only proceed successfully if the organizations' leaders are in full support.
- Small organizations entering into partnership for the first time often have to learn how to monitor and evaluate projects. If that's the case, it's important for the organization to ask for help. Partnering organizations have a responsibility to be accountable to each other.
- Be open and honest. If you need more time, have to make adjustments in the budget, or if things aren't going as planned, admit it to the partnering organization. A good partnership is one that is flexible and adaptable.
- A good partnership is also built on trust.
- Funding is not the only reason to partner. Organizations can partner to build capacity, share existing resources, expertise, goods, and services. And always: a healthy partnership benefits both/all partners.
- Sometimes to you have to walk away from or conclude a partnership. And that's OK.
- Invest in relationships before pitching partnership.
- Establish clear roles in the partnership. Know who is responsible for what.
Again, thank you to our panelists.
