Imperial Plus

Our first careers fair ✅ ManholeMetrics attended the Imperial College London Green Careers Fair yesterday evening to engage with >500 current students and recent graduates 👩🎓. It was brilliant to see job market entrants so keen to pursue climate positive 🌍 roles! We were under strict instructions ⚠️ to minimise our associated carbon footprint 👣 so thought long and hard about what we could bring. We landed upon miniature cacti 🌵 in copper pots, which went down a treat (all 75 disappeared 🪄 in the first hour) with the goal of encouraging attendees to think carefully about water and its value in our society. Yesterday, we had the great pleasure of hosting the 2024 Green Careers Fair at our South Kensington campus! Over 550 students from all backgrounds attended the event, making the fair the faster-growing at Imperial College London! I am extremely grateful towards the thirty companies and organisations that held stalls at the event for well over two hours, and who brilliantly explained the scope of their much-needed work. Attendees from multiple universities, and at stages of learning ranging from undergraduate to PhD and beyond, had to opportunity to learn more about the very diverse ways to become engaged in sustainability, from consulting to materials engineering. I hope we have inspired many to take a first step into what will become flourishing careers! The event was sponsored by Sustainable Imperial, and organised jointly by a group of students societies from the college, namely Imperial Plus, Climate Entrepreneurs , the Imperial Environmental Society, Imperial Engineers Without Borders UK , and Imperial College Chemical Engineering Society. Many thanks to Undaunted: Tackling climate change with innovation for increasing our reach to new networks! I am immensely thankful to the organising committee which made all of this possible, in particular to Milán Páczai 🌍🌀🌌, Kar Jan Chan, Julia Mitra, Marta García Belza, Belle Pugh, Zahir Thebault, Selina Y., Tisya Dewan, Xuanyong Tay, Isabelle Nolan Finnegan, Alicia Chan, Charlene Tai, and Ishita Swaroop, who committed many hours to its preparation and execution. I am very obliged to all the others involved in this project, especially Colleen Handriani W. for her precious advice. With our energies still up, I very much look forward to our next event. Imperial + is working with Imperial’s Sustainability Strategy committee to host a focus group to hear students views on how the college can help reduce carbon emissions from student flights. Come on down on 21st June to give your views and help us brainstorm what initiatives the college can help with on incentivizing students to travel local during term breaks! ➕
