At #IUSPHB, we celebrate education's power to transform lives and communities. It opens doors to #opportunities, fosters #equality, and is a fundamental #humanright. According to the United Nations, this year’s theme, "AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation," encourages reflection on how education empowers individuals and communities to navigate and influence #technological advancements. #Internationaldayofeducation #artificialintelligence #educationforall #learnandgrow

All of us at #IUSPHB are proud to announce that Deanna Suter in the Department of Health & Wellness Design and Holly Thrasher in the Dean’s Office are one of only eight staff members across Indiana University Bloomington campus to receive this year’s Staff Merit Award! Candidates are nominated by colleagues for their contributions to “fostering a positive work environment and encouraging continued excellence.” The goal of the annual recognition is to foster a continued spirit of community and gratitude, and each winner receives $2,000. Ms. Suter and Ms. Thrasher bring more than 40 years of collective professional service to IU, and we deeply appreciate all they do contributing to the excellence of our #publichealth community in their current roles. The campus-wide ceremony will take place on Wednesday, February 5 at 3pm EST in Franklin Hall and is open to the public. One of our goals at #IUSPHB is to seek out and foster partnerships with local and nationwide #publichealth organizations, so it is no surprise that the American Academy of Health Behavior (AAHB) elected our own Drew Pickett, Ph.D. from the Department of Health & Wellness Design to join their Board of Directors in the position of Treasurer. “I am honored to accept this nomination,” shares Dr. Pickett in his statement for AAHB Treasurer. “My research is broadly situated at the intersection of social connectedness and health behavior, focused on development of tailored interventions for diverse and #underserved populations.” Dr. Pickett has proven himself an asset to the IU public health community – particularly in the field of #Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) caregiver support – in his relatively short time here. His many accomplishments over the past year include being chosen as 2024 Indiana Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center’s Research and Education Component (REC) Scholar, receiving National Institute Of Aging (NIA) funding to research the unique needs of ADRD caregivers in the LGBTQ+ community, and hosting a lunch event on-campus last fall to discuss with colleagues and leaders across the state of Indian the #healthdisparities faced by #sexual and #gender minority populations. Congratulations Dr. Pickett! We have no doubt your contributions to AAHB will be invaluable. Read more: https://bit.ly/4hbad80 #facultysuccess #BringOnTomorrow

#IUSPHB honors the legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., fighting for #equality and #civilrights, and celebrating all those who continue to bravely stand up against #injustice and have made positive #change possible. Let us keep Dr. King’s dream alive of making the world a better place by treating each other with #love and #respect. We have come a long way, but still have a long road to walk, and as a community we cannot afford to be complacent. #IUSPHB Research Associate Cris Henderson, MA, MPH from the Department of Applied Health Science at Indiana University-Bloomington and Prevention Insights was recently interviewed by Fox 59 about the Citizen Opioid Responders (COR) program. COR is a free, 30-minute online training course that equips everyday citizens with the knowledge and tools they need to reverse an #overdose and potentially save a life, employing the use of naloxone (Narcan). COR has been adopted at multiple IU campuses and several counties across the state. The #opioid epidemic continues to be a major #publichealth crisis, and empowering community members with the right skills can make all the difference. This training program is one more step in combating the issue and supporting those affected. #IUSPHB is proud to announce that Carmen Tekwe-Zoh, Ph.D. has been named the John and Carole Seffrin Endowed Professor of Public Health. Named in part for decorated faculty member and CEO of the American Cancer Society Dr. John Seffrin, the endowed professorship is one of several recent honors for Dr. Tekwe. "I am quite honored to have my passion for methodological and collaborative work be recognized by this appointment," Dr. Tekwe says, adding, that the professorship will allow her research group to "broaden our research scope to include novel #statistical and deep learning methods for assessing the impacts of #circadian biomarkers, #lifestyle factors, and digital #healthdata from multiple sources on various aspects of circadian epidemiology." Congratulations, Dr. Tekwe! #excellence #research #BringOnTomorrow

Thanks to an incredible collaborative effort co-led by our own Associate Professor Misty Hawkins (she/her) in the Department of Health & Wellness Design and Shelley Johns, Psy.D. from the Indiana University School of Medicine, faculty from across the IU system – and beyond – have created THRIVE NOW, a three-phase research program to develop #healthyweight and #wellness programs for Black survivors of #breastcancer. Drs. Hawkins and Johns have partnered with Dr. Jennifer McChristian, LCSW, M.S.W., D.S.W., assistant dean for #diversity affairs at Indiana University School of Social Work due to her extensive experience with providing #accessible, culturally responsive, person-centered #mentalhealth care. Together with the support of 10 interdisciplinary experts and partnerships with IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center, Regenstrief Institute, Inc., Walther Cancer Foundation, and Pink4Ever, the #holistic health program launched last summer. “Our team felt a deep commitment to filling this critical gap by developing a culturally appealing healthy lifestyle program to support individual health goals,” says Dr. Johns. “The eight-session program was the highlight of 2024 for me.” Read more about the creation of THRIVE NOW and next steps here: https://go.iu.edu/8rVK #healthequity #breastcancer #BringonTomorrow
