Got some cool news from Memphis - I produced a short film called FREEDOM'S VILLAGE, about the sharecropper tent cities in Fayette County, TN in the 1960s. It world premiered at INDIE MEMPHIS last weekend - and it won the award for Best Hometowner Short! Congrats to our cast and crew, especially writer/director Kristen Hill, fellow producer/editor Nathaniel C. Ball, cinematographer David Goodman and production designer Brian J. Ruggaber. They put so much time into this project, outside of their day jobs at UM. It was all worth it 👍 #indiefilm #indiefilmmaking #memphis #grindcity

I feel a peculiar sense of alignment amidst the uncertainty today. Let's go back to 2020. At that time, like many #AsianAmericans, I grappled with the drastic increase in reported Anti-Asian hate crimes in the U.S. and the growing conversations about Anti-Blackness in the Asian-American community. Meanwhile these incidences of verbal and physical violence were bolstered by equally violent legislative and political shifts under Trump's first administration. So. Many. Layers. This reality drove me to begin collecting a series of oral histories with a community historian and now close friend, Emerald Dunn, in our hometown of #Memphis, TN. We united in our yearning to find narratives against the grain of mainstream media, to hold these narratives up to the world (and especially to ourselves as Chinese Americans) to show that we are more than what the media portrays of us. I am affirmed because 4 years after meeting Emerald, our hard work and conviction to honor the timeline of Chinese Americans in our corner of the country is stronger and more necessary than ever. And it's just the beginning. I'm proud to share that our documentary, #BluffCityChinese will premiere next week at the INDIE MEMPHIS Film Festival on November 15th, and the virtual screening link is currently available for pre-order on the festival's website. Please watch and share your thoughts and feelings. We still have so much story to tell. And no matter who governs us, as long as we are here, they will be told. Indie Memphis fosters an inclusive space for local filmmakers, focusing on screening new and revival films that might not be released in Memphis otherwise.
