The climate crisis is real. Our employees have witnessed it first-hand. Our SAR constellations give our first responders the ability to see in the dark and through weather. Enabling them to efficiently plan disaster response saves lives.
In the aftermath of Typhoon Gaemi, which tragically has claimed hundreds of lives, the importance of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) in disaster management has never been clearer. SAR technology, which utilizes radar to create detailed images of the Earth's surface, provides unparalleled capabilities in monitoring and assessing the impact of severe weather events. Unlike optical imagery, SAR penetrates through clouds and operates in any weather conditions, making it an invaluable tool to disaster response teams by enabling near real-time damage assessments day or night. This ability to continuously monitor an evolving situation is crucial for minimizing casualties and preparing first-responders. For me this is also personal, storm like Gaemi affect the lives of my employees in Asia. I have seen the flooding and damage to their homes and those of their relatives. SAR's plays a pivotal role in post-disaster response and recovery. By offering high-resolution data that reveal changes in land and infrastructure affected by flooding, subsidence, and landslides, SAR helps emergency responders and humanitarian organizations prioritize their efforts and allocate resources more effectively. This precision in damage assessment ensures that assistance is directed where it is most needed, helping to accelerate recovery efforts and mitigate the long-term consequences of the disaster. The climate crisis is real. Storms are getting more powerful. Commercial SAR companies like Airbus Defence and Space, Capella Space, ICEYE, Umbra play a critical role in safeguarding billions of lives is becoming more critical. The insights provided by SAR not only improve our ability to prepare for and respond to such events but also enhance our overall resilience to future threats. The wake of Typhoon Gaemi underscores the urgent need for open data (as Joe Morrison vociferously argues) and the democratization of advanced monitoring tools. There is no question SAR is an indispensable asset in disaster management. By making SAR data and tools accessible to the wider public we increase market size and better protect communities worldwide.
ESA - the Agency that killing it with the Copernicus program. The Sentinel satellites are democratizing synthetic aperture radar, a.k.a SAR globally
NASA? Never heard of them. 🤷♂️ Yes, that's right, we're selling t-shirts! "The best tshirt I've ever seen" - Daniel Neuenschwander "Oh, I like this shirt" - Josef Aschbacher Now for sale here: https://lnkd.in/eDJbGRpm We're trying to hit the right balance between quality and affordability. To have a laugh and spread ESA's name, while producing something wearable. Feedback welcome. Big thank you to the European Space Agency - ESA branding office and the DG for opening the licence to use the logo! And a big thank you to Sam Bammens and Julia D., who run the Space Attire web-store, for bringing my ideas to life. More designs to come very soon!
I recently came across this Sovereign Class starship that might just tickle the #trekkie and #geoguessr in all of you. Have a good start to the week!
A great primer by Helen Davidson on China's Maritime Militia, the PRC's primary means of grey zone warfare across the IndoPacific. Quotes from Gregory Poling leader of the amazing team at Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS)'s Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative. "The maritime militia has existed for decades but has become more professional, better equipped, and more militarised under the leadership of President Xi Jinping, who has overhauled China’s armed forces since taking power in 2012. It is made up of two main forces. One is the professional fleet of at least 100 purpose-built boats which have the appearance of fishing vessels. The other fleet, known as the Spratly Backbone Fishing Vessels (SBFV), is a larger group of actual fishing boats that operate out of ports across Hainan and Guangdong, and have been drafted into China’s missions. The professional fleet consists of stronger boats with better, often military-grade equipment. They’re usually visible on satellite tracking platforms swarming around disputed locations. The SBFV is harder to spot, and usually have lower grade satellite transmitters or none at all. Some have had structural and technological upgrades."

From introducing the new 50cm resolution ICEYE Dwell Fine mode, to sharing key insights with high-profile geospatial operators, the ICEYE team had a successful DGI - Defence Geospatial Intelligence conference. Topics discussed with the global geospatial intelligence community at the event were: • the advantages of commercial #SAR satellites for monitoring strategic borders • advancing digital innovations for rapid information sharing • the latest innovations for improving situational awareness • the importance of quickly delivering data in the right format to the right people with products such as ICEYE Ocean Vision Detect. We would like to thank all who visited our booth, and #DGI2024 for once again arranging an exceptional event in London.
What does a finance analyst, a climate scientist and intelligence officer have in common? They all use geospatial insights to make the best possible decisions. Synthetic Aperture Radar's can measure millimeter differences on the ground while seeing through weather and darkness. Superhero abilities right at your fingertips. Are you new to SAR? No problem! Thanks to Maxime, here's the best explainer video out there on how synthetic aperture radar works and how it can help you. #SAR #geospatialanalysis
Radar satellites can see at night and through clouds. They also can detect millimetre changes in some cases, from space (!) But I've found them really counter-intuitive, so I spent the last 6 months working on a video explaining how they work: https://lnkd.in/eAUjeWdB There are a lot of people I need to thank for this, this was probably the biggest thing I've made so far - Darren Muff for sharing the excitement and answering my dumb questions - Umbra for their open data program, meaning 80% of all the images in the video are from them - Thomas Ager for writing what I think is the best book on SAR out there, having a long conversation with me, and proof-reading my script - BoxMica for making such cool SAR renders, and letting me use them in this video - Jason W for helping me actually make this, and being a great supporter behind the scenes - ICEYE for having taught me a bunch of what I know now and having so many cool animations! --- #radar #sar #remotesensing #earthobservation #physics #copernicus #maps #geospatial
