Transport is one of the major sources of global emissions, making its decarbonization a crucial aspect of the fight against climate change. In essence, countries are progressively adopting innovative technologies to transform logistics systems, reduce emissions, improve efficiency, and address workforce shortages. Japan and Switzerland are at the forefront of these efforts, demonstrating innovative approaches that combine sustainability with technology. Japan’s plan to build a ‘conveyor belt’ system between Tokyo and Osaka is a prime example of innovation in logistics. This system is expected to use the center of an existing highway, transporting container-sized units in groups of three, operating 24/7. Automated forklifts will further handle the loading and unloading, while trucks will manage last-mile deliveries. In this regard, the benefits are prominent: alleviating traffic congestion and reducing transport emissions. The system also helps tackle Japan's growing labor shortages, which are worsened by a shrinking working-age population—from 87 million thirty years ago to less than 73 million presently. With trucks currently transporting 90% of the nation’s cargo and the country’s transport capacity projected to fall by 34% by 2030, this system is inclined to reshape logistics. Additionally, trials are scheduled to begin in 2028. Likewise, Switzerland is moving forward with the Cargo Sous Terrain project, a 500-kilometer underground freight network. Powered entirely by renewable energy, self-driving pods will transport goods 80 meters below ground, cutting CO₂ emissions by 80% compared to traditional road transport. Decarbonizing transport goes beyond technology; it aims to create a sustainable and efficient future. Hence, through pioneering initiatives in Japan and Switzerland, both countries are setting new global standards for cleaner and more effective logistics systems. Carbon credits, generated through environmental projects such as reforestation and renewable energy in developing countries, represent the removal of one metric ton of CO2 per credit. These credits enable governments and companies to offset their emissions, promoting sustainable development and contributing to global climate goals. According to the 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝐈𝐄𝐓𝐀), the global carbon credit market is expanding rapidly, with projections suggesting it could reach $𝟐𝟓𝟎 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 annually by 𝟐𝟎𝟑𝟎. This growth has the potential to offset up to 𝟓 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐬 of carbon emissions each year, significantly bolstering efforts to combat climate change. In parallel, at the 𝐶𝑂𝑃29 climate summit, a historic agreement was reached to establish a global carbon credit trading system built on credibility and transparency. A key result of the agreement is the launch of a UN carbon trading platform next year to simplify transactions and improve traceability. The agreement also introduced a bilateral trading framework, enabling countries to directly trade credits. This system aims to create registries to track credits, ensure transparency, and address potential project failures. In this regard, the 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝐄𝐔) advocated for stricter oversight, while 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 (𝐔𝐒) pushed for greater flexibility in bilateral agreements. The compromise allows resource-limited countries to use the UN-backed system, though the credits do not carry automatic UN endorsement. Moreover, bilateral trading has commenced, with 𝐒𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐳𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 purchasing credits from 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 earlier this year. As the new framework is implemented, transaction volumes are expected to increase, enhancing the carbon credit market and accelerating global climate change mitigation efforts. In this context, the global durable carbon dioxide removal (CDR) demand sector is vital for long-term CO2 reduction and aligns with carbon credit initiatives. By leveraging technologies like biochar and direct air capture, it supports the growth of carbon credit markets. As nations pursue net-zero goals, CDR solutions will drive increased demand for these technologies.
